Description They don't look anything like the actors. That's how much I care.

This scribble was spawned from a conversation one of my sis-in-laws and I were having concerning what Peter Jackson did to destroy the Lord of the Rings, which we both read and loved long before the movies happened.

Now don't get us wrong, we both love the movies, but there are changes that really really really irked us. Don't even get me started on Arwen vs. Eowyn! I mean, c'mon, Mr. Jackson! There's a REASON Tolkein banished Arwen to the Indexes: she just wasn't important to the plot! So why focus on her and constantly ignore the woman who totally cleans house which is Eowyn!!!

*Ahem* I said I wasn't going to get started on that...

So we both agreed that this part was, by far, the WORST part of all 3 movies, and was the stupidest thing Peter Jackson ever did in his whole life. Sam and Frodo are inseperable, and that's just the way it was meant to be. Sam and Frodo pretty much have the strongest friendship in the history of fictional friendships, and that's part of what makes the story so epic! Why the heck do movie directors think we fans want to see the characters we love so much completely changed into ... characters we don't like very much? Frodo would NEVER tell Sam to go home, and he would NEVER trust Gollum! He sympathized with Gollum, yes, but never trusted him.

This is what's uncanny. When I was reading the books, I skimmed the "Aragorn" sections, because all I wanted to read about was "WHAT'S HAPPENING TO SAM AND FRODO?!?!?!" because thier half of the story was so intense and they were so cool about it. And when I watch movie, and I skip all the Sam and Frodo parts so I can watch the "Aragorn" parts. That's how badly Jackson murdered Frodo. Frodo was SO hardcore in the books, and he was a serious wanny-weakling in the movies.

But don't get me wrong, I still like the movies!

I think the biggest mistake Jackson did in his life was Kili/Tauriel. I mean, c'mon! The chick didn't even exist in the book and it isn't relevant in the movie either. I believe it was just made to fulfill the need of a dwarf/elf romance, something that shouldn't be there because, while they respected each other and could work together in moments of despair, elves and dwarves didn't get to get along long until the events in Lord of the Rings with Legolas and Gimli. If Tauriel/Kili existed in the book canon, Legolas (That also didn't appear in the book) would have been more friendly with Gimli, remembering the relationship that Tauriel and Kili had. Of course, they ended up being friends, but they had to pass a lot until that happened.

Yeah, turning Frodo into "the sissy" from main characters in movies was the biggest mistake from the movie to me.
As for this picture, LOL

i had exactly the same approach to the book, i kept reading on to the Two Towers, and soon started wondering when we'd hear more abt Sam and Frodo, and had to check to notice it won't happen before the second half! i couldn't stop myself from reading large portions of their story before returning to read in orderly fashion again

while the movie was just soooo disappointing -.-' i especially hated what they did to Faramir (well, along with Frodo..), as i had really expected to see him.. then he turned out to be Boromir 2 x_x

i mean, i parted in good spirits with Boromir, i did..

but.. good riddance, in all honesty.. we don't need him back now that he's gone

Haha though I actually like most of how the movies were made, I must agree that this bit was a bit ridiculus..

First of all it's like.. we just walked all the way to Mordor together... Sam go home, I don't need you anymore.. got a new friend now..

I mean.. wait..what? And then I totaly find it hillarious how Sam finds the lembasbread and totally crushed their last food supplies.. I mean sure maybe they weren't as potent without the leaves but surely it was still the only food they had.

Other than that I love the movies.. I even like the fact that they are different from the books because they work on their own and at the same time you can read the book at the same time as watching the movie without getting too bored of having the same story all over again. It's like a slightly alternative reality.

Though I must say, I always found Arwen to be pretty important, though maybe that's because I'm especially partial to Aragorn's part of the story.

Sounds soooooo familiar to me! I came to the stage where I read all my favourite parts in the LOTR books again and about 80% of those must be Frodo & Sam moments

Your artwork is pretty awesome, I really love it Thumbs Up!

Haha, loved the rant! (And the artwork too.. )

I love the films, but after never having read the book (I own it, just need to park my ass down and read it) you've inspired me to give it a read as I never realised the film differed so much from the book!

As soon as my exams are over, I'm going to delve into it!

I started to read the hobbit, but I may switch and start with the Lotr I'm actually quite excited to read it and see how much it differs in relation to the characters etc.. It's quite a beefy book though, I will finish it one day however ^^

Finish the Hobbit first. It helps the Fellowship of the Ring make more sense at the beginning (it has a long beginning just to warn you, but it's also my favorite of the all the books). I think the characters are what differ the most from the books to movies. The plot and events remain pretty much the same minus and plus a few scenes.

I agree with you so much here! I actually saw the movies first (when I was a stupid kid and before I realized it was based off a book XD) but when I read the books, I didn't miss Arwen, nor did I miss the stupid break-up drama. Honestly, as much as I loved the movie characters, the book characters were so much better and I wish Jackson had paid more attention to them. Book Sam would NEVER have left Frodo over something stupid like that, -even if he told him to. I'm pretty sure seeing the Ring having that much of an influence over Frodo would make Sam want to stay even more. Why leave him at the worst part of the journey when he knows Frodo is in his worst state of mind?! That makes as much sense as Aragorn cutting off the head of a messenger... .

LordoftheWolfDale [2012-08-28 08:55:07 +0000 UTC]

They played up Arwen so at the end when she shows up and they get married no one will say "dafuq she?" And having Frodo banish Sam was to show what affect the ring was having on him.

I always skip frodo in the books/movies,I hate him. I dont like eowyn, Legs is a punk, Sams the real hero, and Gimli is a badass.

GingerOpal In reply to LordoftheWolfDale [2012-08-28 09:53:41 +0000 UTC]

That's a given. But did Jackson have to waste so much important plot-time on Arwen's pointless slow-motion languishing? It got very annoying.

And there are other ways to show the Ring's affect on Frodo. The book did a good enough job of it.

LordoftheWolfDale In reply to GingerOpal [2012-08-28 09:59:08 +0000 UTC]

The problem of putting a 1000+ page book in film, gote to make short cuts, you cant make a direct translation.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GingerOpal In reply to LordoftheWolfDale [2012-08-28 10:01:51 +0000 UTC]

Short-cuts by ADDING more scenes of Arwen? The scene in the first movie was enough, it was the perfect length, we understood Aragorn had a pretty girlfriend, so why did she take up so much of the rest of the movies if Jackson was trying to make short cuts?

And ADDING the scene with Sam being banished by Frodo didn't shorten anything either.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LordoftheWolfDale In reply to GingerOpal [2012-08-28 10:07:33 +0000 UTC]

Shorting the story and drama, into a more compact form, so take out useless characters (who were awesome) to build up more important ones, Arwen is important, she is the future queen and the love and hope of aragorn. Making sam leave smashes alot of drama, days and chapters of drama in to a shorten scene.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GingerOpal In reply to LordoftheWolfDale [2012-08-28 20:08:54 +0000 UTC]

I was fine with Arwen replacing other characters for time's sake. I would have done something similar in that case. What I wasn't fine with were all of the redundant languishing scenes (mostly in the The Two Towers) that slowed the movie to a crawl-pace. Don't get me wrong, I like Arwen (I even got teary-eyed during her vision in The Return of the King), but she got way too much screen-time for how little influence her character had on the plot, as compared to other characters.

I truly don't see how banishing Sam shortens the scene. It could have been left out completely and no one would've missed it. It was obvious from the first movie that the Ring was a bad influence on Frodo. Jackson likes to beat his audience over the head with redundancies like we're not paying attention or something. I think the "Sam being banished" drama could have been reserved for more "Sam rescuing Frodo" drama, because that part was way understated, and it downplayed Sam's awesomeness and upped Frodo's uselessness.

LordoftheWolfDale In reply to GingerOpal [2012-08-29 04:35:30 +0000 UTC]

Having Arwen shown dying, explained how saurons domination was just more then a matter of crowns and borders but Spiritually as well, it affects all live for eternity. And having Sam leave, made it so sam could return and save frodo who is TRULY weak and useless.

Family or no family, you are serving the LORD, and that's what you need to focus on, Elder. You're the only person responsible for slacking off on your mission, no one can be blamed for that except you.

"dec 11, 2011, at 8 pm US mountain time, i will be set apart as a missionary so that means no more computer, movies or tv, or replies and comments for 2 years" And yet here you are online discussing dwarves and movies? That is NOT the example you should be setting for our church! Your presence here online as a missionary makes you and your religion look really bad. If you can't take your religion seriously, then why should anyone else?

It's only two years. Be immersed your work. You are SO BLESSED to be on a mission right now! I was denied my chance to serve a mission because of unexpected health problems. I wanted to go SO BAD to serve the Lord, and I still regret being unable to serve! So it frustrates me greatly when I see missionaries taking their precious mission for granted and can't even follow basic rules they promised THE LORD they would follow! Don't miss out on this unbelievable opportunity to serve the Lord and everyone around you who needs your help (because they do need your help!). You need to keep yourself spiritually tuned so you can find and help those people who are searching for the truth.

DeviantArt is no place to keep spiritually tuned. So get off DeviantArt and get back to work, Elder! Some of the best missionaries are those who are not distracted by getting letters from home. This is not your time, it is the Lord's. You are his instrument, and instruments are no good unless they're in tune! Stay tuned Elder! Although I don't know you, I believe in you! And more importantly, so does the Lord.

It states clearly in the book and the movie that Dwarves have a tendency to be weak when it comes to managing power, and would therefore give in to the Ring's influence. And Elves are selfish know-it-alls who don't want to help anyone, and humans have no willpower, I suppose that's why they chose a hobbit, too clueless to really know what's going on. (Elrond leans over to Gandalf during the council and says "That Baggins fellow looks dumb enough to walk into a volcano without question, let's choose him.")

What? The book Clearly states that dwarves cannot be dominated by anothers will, As the Vala who created them did so during Morgoths reign in middle earth, so they're hardy beyond belief. The evil in dwarves is that they are secretive and greedy.
