Amazons.

Female warriors who were the first to ride on horseback. Whenever they subdued another people they kept the men whom seemed better fit to breed and killed them afterwards. Any male babies were put to death while the girls were adopted as part of the clan. The name Amazon probably means breastless, that's why sometimes they were represented with only one breast, indicating their great ability as archers.
The most famous Amazons were three sisters: queen Hippolyta, whose girdle Heracles had to recover as one of his Twelve Labours; Penthesilea, who assisted Troy in the Trojan War and was killed by Achilles; Antiope, who was abducted by Theseus, become his ife and mothered his son Hippolytus. The Amazons tried to retrieve Antiope and marched on Athens, during which attack Antiope was killed.
The Attic war with the Amazon is called Amazonomachy (machy = battle with the Amazons) and together with the Centauromachy (the battle between Lapiths and centaurs during Theseus' friend Pirithous's wedding), the Titanomachy (Olympin gods vs Titans) and the Gigantomachy (gods vs giants) is one the many tamings of the wild attempted by Greeks. The barbarous and monstrous was to be tamed and have order and civilization in its place.
