Yeah, I was one of the first to hear about the Wiiware port, since (interesting you bring up Super Smash Bros.) we had to ask Pixel's permission to inculde the Cave Story characters in Indie Brawl: [link]

Okay. So I downloaded the game, and can select characters, but then what? Is that all there is? How do I start?

As the title screen says, the 1st and 2nd players' action buttons are, respectively, F+G and O+P. Just make sure the cursors are over which characters you want, then mash those four buttons, the game will begin. Left/Right + Any of these buttons will execute special attacks, as you'd probably guess.

Wow, it's not too bad. I just played with Quote and the white skinned gal as a practice dummy. Controls are simple, which is nice. My only gripes are graphical: The Polar Star was always blue in the games, and the "ghost" of King that the charged blade attack creates just makes it look like an angry puppy in a sweater is somehow flying out of the sword. Might I suggest re-working the spirte to make him look more ghostly? Like, amorphous limbs, more particle or vapour effects, and less detailed eyes? I always picture King's "sword ghost" looking more like a wild, primal apparition resembling King.

Yeah, we had to halt all work on Quote (the King and polar star issues, as well as adding smoother/more animation) when Nicalis told us about the Wiiware port, which would potentially transform Cave Story into a corporate license (if Amaya were to be that big a fool) and virtually eliminate any chance of obtaining permission to include CS properties in Brawl (Indie Brawl, that is, it's now entirely possible that Quote could be in the next Smash Bros.
SO yeah, if you want a more completed character, try out the Golden Knight (the hockey player), he's got almost all his animations, plus a cool Bonesaw transformation once the green gauge on his status bar fills up.

When Pixel first developed Cave Story, Quote was originally named Curly Brace. He switched the names in the second iteration, but his intentions were clear from this early concept art: [link]
