I'm glad I sat back down and finished this tonight. I saw Kate on The Tonight Show a few weeks ago and was instantly motivated to do a portrait of her. She's so gorgeous!! The only thing that I didn't like doing on this portrait was the hair. It took a very very long time. I think the face turned out pretty realistic but I think the hair takes away from the realism of it. I will keep learning and trying new techniques with hair to make it look more realistic. Thanks to everyone who commented on the WIP and my recent journal...you guys motivated me to sit back down and work on it. I appreciate all the comments.12"x18" Fabriano Hotpress

I know how you feel with the hair on Kate...wow it takes forever. You have her face down so beautifully and it's so realistic! I wish I had the talent in your hand.

with the hair, i think it's fantastical and know that im no where near as good as that when i attempt it...
since you sould like to improve the hair, im thinking really hard and that maybe u can try blending in light bits with the dark bits a little more..? i know that you probably want to keep the highlights, but maybe just make them a little less defined or a little more textured so they look less "flat"? i dunno...and also, i think maybe the fly aways at the top of the head aren't necessary because i think they it would actually look better with out that little bit of detail...just my opinion though! WELL DONE ONCE AGAIN! (this is going straight to my favs!)

What advice would you give on drawing hair that you've learned so far? I have the worst time with hair, not that I'm anywhere near your level, but I hope to be one day. Anyway, I think this is fantastic. She is a gorgeous lady, and you're very good with the realism!

Wow, what a great drawing! OK, so you're not happy with the hair. But I've got to tell you I'm impressed. The thing that gets me are those individual white (blond) hairs - how do you do that? I've been trying to figure this out for a long time now. Do you erase very carefully? Do you draw them in with some type of white pencil/pastel/chalk? If you'd be so kind as to give me a clue I'd really appreciate it.

Awsome picture, ive found that sometimes with hair putting too much detail into it detracts from the realism. Dont quite know why! For example, the individual hairs sticking out probably aren't necessary as the draw attention away from the face which looks extremely realistic.

Hi, I really like this drawing. The face is perfect. I feel that you could have spent a bit more time on the hair with those light whispy highlights. I know that hair is definately the most time consuming and difficult part of the face to perfect. Still a great drawing. I love all your work.

t's ok. We've been sending eachother e-mails back and forth for a while and he told me his power is knocked out right now so he can't send me any reference pictures until it comes back on. He's sitting in a cafe in the city right now using one of their computers. Yeah he is a genious. Thanks, he said the power is supposed to come back on on sunday so I will probably start the drawing either sunday or monday.
