Yes most including myself tend to go for that pointed hat.  Especially after that iconic John Howe painting with Gandalf walking with the hat staff came out.

I sort of didn't realize he's always  hatless as Gandalf the white ..until you mentioned it!

I don't recall if he this way in the books as it has been a long time since I read them but that is how the films work.

In the three or  so Hildebrandt paintings that show Gandalf the white , he doesn't have a hat there either
So It's most likely  right

Funny I have books on the brothers separately.  I will have to check the third one.  It is all on the Tolkien stuff.  I believe it will be on both of them.
