okay this is probably a dumb question, but I'm new to gimp. I was wondering if the presets work the same as presets for photoshop? and if not what are they? like what do they do?Β

GrindGod In reply to Cassiefontenot98 [2018-03-02 05:22:27 +0000 UTC]
It is not the same. Gimp uses a file, that stores the brush settings. This includes, what brushfile (.gbr) is used by the preset, as well as the paint dynamics that are applied. The dynamics are also stored in a separate file (.gdyn). In photoshop all these informations are baked into one brushfile (.abr), that could also contain many other brushes - all in one (sometimes) big file. While it is a little bit complicated with gimp it also offers more flexibility, but the photoshop format is - well - more user-friendly...

Can these be used in GIMP 2.6? Sorry but my headstrong tablet refuses to work with 2.8.

If I were betting, everything would work fine except for the presets and dynamics as they changed the way those work in 2.8 and up.

how to convert these to abr (photoshop)?
π: 0 β©: 1
GrindGod In reply to Pinki3pie [2017-08-09 05:00:13 +0000 UTC]
That is not easily done and you could only use the brushimages, without the settings, that define their behavior, because they are specific to gimp.

I came here looking for an alternative to Jazza's custom photoshop brushes and it looks like your pack is the closest im going to get. It's a brilliant, extensive pack filled with more tools than I'll need but there are so many that the pack is overly complicated... If you have the time a guide to these brushes would be nice. If you don't have the time, chill, just a short one telling me which brushes are most similar to Jazza's and how i could change some to be more like his brushes because after opening the tool presets section, I'm overwhelmed...
Thx

Sry i am not familiar with Jazza's brushes. You have to find out for yourself what you need.., but i guess you'll find the most useful brushes under the BASIC, PENCILS and PAINT categories.

Can anyone help me? I've tried downloading brushes for my GIMP 2.8, but it never works. The "download" seems OK, and I follow the directions for unzipping and drag/dropping into the GIMP brush folder, then I bring up the program and do a "refresh", but the new brushes are nowhere to be found! Any advice???

In the .gimp-2.8/brushes folder should be three subfolders: BB - Basic, BB - Natural and BB - Texture. Please check if these folders are present and if they contain actually brushes. Next open gimp and be sure you have docked the brush panel. In this panel open the filter menu. There is a small down arrow on the right side to open it. BB - Basic, BB - Natural and BB - Texture should appear here as filter-tags. If this is not the case you can check if the paths to your custom resources are set correctly. Go to the Menu - Edit - Settings. In the window on the left side is a category: Folders. In this section you can set paths to any sort of custom resources. Check the path for brushes and eventually add the folder where you have stored the files.

You did an terrific research putting together all those wonderful settings, brushes, dynamics. Your package is quite different compared with the common brush packs around, they look made for the kindergarden.Β Β Β
I know this because i did and do similar researches. My goal is to create 1-2 dozen usable settings, to have a clear overview of all the stricly necessary tools which i want to master in depth then.
I found tagging something awkward in gimp. The best method is to put presets into folders as you did. Works perfectly and is uncluttered, easy to use, when searching for a workflow step. Excellent. I found some little inconsistencies by brush spacings and had to save brushes at a smaller space value, because some static brushes show really bad artifacts on the edges.
>But for nearly every Brush, i had on my mind, that it is usable in a lot of different ways and that it is not to specific.
Β , working with digital mediums reserves some surprises. Nice surprises, and I think you did a great discovery with that. If we look back the first tv shows, they tried to emulate theatre, but the idea wasnt so good.Β
I know, this example has very little comparison, but explains hopefully the concept i want to highlight. Thanks again for your precious work.Β Β

Hey gothicAge,
i really enjoyed, reading your comment! Making this set was a big quest or journey.. Β i have spent a lot time on it - Β from observing traditional media up to reviewing and comparing other brushsets, that i have used before (like Gimp Paint Studio).
A while ago i switched Β to Β Krita, what has become my primary application for digital Painting. Gimp is still my choice for post-processing or purely design-related stuff, but i use only a very small set of tools for that, not comparable with this big brushset...Β Btw if you havenΒ΄t tried out Krita yet, i would highly recommend to do it. ItΒ΄s freely available for linux and windows. Just checkout the link
As you have written, there are some brushes and presets that need an overhaul and i have planned to do an update, but it's on a long to-do list. Good to know that the most stuff works as intended.
Digital painting offers exciting and fascinating possibilities of expression. (beyond the stuff, that is done for the cg-industry..) I have thought a lot about the question of emulating traditional media vs. finding 'new' digital styles that stand for their own. I think It's an ongoing process, and i am curious to where it will lead. But i am sure that we have to start, from where we are coming: we must try to simulate traditional media to develop and transform them to something new!

Im always on the outlook for nice plugins, they are soo helpful, inspiring, I love that.
Krita? uffβ¦im a mac user, pity. But Gimp improved alot, and im very excited about the next big update, which comes out probably this fall.
ohβ¦dont worry. This little tweaks are easily to solve, i wrote it only as info. Wasnt my intention to complain anything.Β
yes, absolutely. Digital tools offer new possibilities and we have to discover them. Traditional media are always a good reference, however.Β
