Many of you will know this story. On Nov 24, 1973 the United States Navy airplane (C-47 SkyTrain also known as “Dakota”) was forced to land on Sólheimasandur’s black sandy beach in the south of Iceland. The crew survived the landing and the airplane’s remains are still standing at the crash site. I believe that the helicopter that was sent out to search/rescue crashed with the loss of life.

If you aim to find this wreck, the co-ordinates are easily found, then please walk to it rather than wreck the beach further with more vehicle tracks. A local, very kind, woman offered us a big hint in finding it. That is "go over the cattle grid, not through the hole in the fence." This advice saved us energy and from getting wet!!!

This is a long exposure between showers. The colouration in the sky is from the 10 stop filter. The "ghost" is of my better half who got caught whilst taking her own image. I could have removed this smudge but I think it adds to the apocalyptic feel.

I had to dash into the plane to take cover from a storm, but then rainbows appeared.
