Cool Skin tones are very orange here, definitely makes it look like a fire.

Where's the light coming from on the right? :\

Your entire gallery is amazing. I was going to add one to my favorites but I couldn't decide which one. They're all so wonderfull.
Questions:
Do you draw your portraits from photographs or from life? And how long does it take to finish them? How old were you when you started painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hank1 In reply to XxSayaxX [2007-03-09 15:16:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

Ah! The question about how long does it take? Well, it depends upon the difficulty of each painting. But it's a very good, understated question. I would work on 4 or 5 paintings at a time. This way I allow for the layers of one painting to dry while working on another.

I usually make a sketch of my subject in pencil to work out my idea. The final painting might contain elements that are not in my sketch. How to use photographic references? First of all, it's almost impossible to work from a photo someone else has taken. I have worked from photos but they must be my photos. After all, it's my vision about the final work that I have in mind. Now I rarely get a perfect photo, so I'll take this and that from my photos. For example, if I'm working from a photo, it might not have the eye or hair or mouth I'm looking for so I find it, or shoot another photo to get what I'm after. For one painting, if working from my photos, I might find what I'm after in as many as 5 or 10 photos.

Oh! How old? I was 31. I chose to master the pencil before I dared touch color.

I'm sorry. I didn't point you to my "Small Paintings" of last year. Why should you have to search? Just exercises to keep at work.
