Description apparently I am up to like 30 plushies now... what an achievement!

Anyway... I'm in love with this guys colour palette, and his little lace neck and bow.
Plus he has a gear on the back of his head... and his head's real big, what more could you want?

Dude, I love your plushies.
I've made a few of my own, but they're not that great, so I'm probably not going to put them on here.
What material do you use for them?
It looks like felt, but I'm not sure.
I cut up an old t-shirt for a couple of mine.

It is felt, yes. My mum got me like a hundred squares of beautifully dyed felt imported from Holland for my birthday. Hehehehe, I'm in felt heaven.
but yes, felt all the way, it's so easy to work with because it doesn't fray, I can get the shapes a lot better.

It's true.
I just don't like the feel of the material, but the fraying is always a problem with me.

Lucky duck.
All that felt.
From ~Holland.

When it's nice felt, I really love it.. but there is a lot of crappy stuff I don't like working with. Still you gotta work with what works for you... and what you can get your hands on!

exactly.
I don't know, I've always ended up with really shitty felt.

You've probably got the cream of the crop felt.

maxwildcat In reply to Hannakin [2008-08-18 21:19:36 +0000 UTC]

why not? i'd like to know how you come up with it ..
do you make a scratch on paper..
how do you pick your buttons? is it whim-based?
what kind of sowing machine(/by hand)?
you probably have some tips after doing so many plushies.. ?

Are you interested in doing some of your own??
hehe, well I don't plan on doing a tute... but in answer to your questions:

I do make some preliminary drawings sometimes just to get the basic idea of what I'm after... but never make a pattern or anything very set in concrete... and a lot of the time I have a plan in my head but make no drawing and make it up as I go along...

I am in love with these plain white matte buttons and use them on a lot of my plushies (lucky I like them so much, cause I have lots) I just really like the way they look with these eyes (Binky has the ones I am talking about.. so does Glace here) but I have a big button stash and like also to have odd eyes... I just choose ones that I think work with the colours I am using..

I sew all my plushies by hand. There is more love and character put into them that way... If I do a few bigger ones (which I plan to... all the ones so far a pretty small) I might use a machine... but I enjoy the process by hand, I feel very connected to it..

Tips? Well felt is a very easy fabric to use (and looks cute and comes in great colours, all round pretty good) because it doesn't fray, so you don't really have to allow like a cm extra on the fabric, so you can work out the exact size you want the plushie and not need to allow for too much shrinking on the end result.
Also, dont try to make arms and legs or anything too small... they start to get pretty impossible to turn inside out without ruining (oh theres another thing, I make them inside out then turn them out)
another tip... get some ideas for a character and then just PRACTICE!
go forth brave soul!

sorry i made you type so much .. I don't have time for making one in the near future.. but i definitely want to try sometimes soon .. and i always wondered how you made yours.. they always have an inspiring thing about them .. (even though i make jokes in almost all your deviant posts ... )

I'll be sure to let you know when i get on it and the result
hopefully soon.

ps: i had no idea you made them inside out

I don't mind typing so much... it's kinda fun to talk about... I like that people find my stuff inspiring!

I'd be happy to see your results or at least hear how you go when you do some... Another tip is to not rush it... try to do fine stitches to get the best result... and don't be put off if your result isn't fantastic... it takes practice! (I should upload one of my first plushies... he's pretty hilarious!)

I did make him yes....

and he's approximately 9 cm tall, and fits in the palm of my hand (I do have quite small hands...)
