Description EDIT EDIT: Redrawn in 2015!:Β

EDIT: For all you creature art peeps, I'm working on an Ollow concept right this very second and I love it. I'm hoping it'll be done super-soon!

I keep saying I'd draw somebody else. OMG I'M SUCH A LIAR I'M SORREH.
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Superman's New 52 design. Jim Lee, I love you, and you're a fantastic artist - one of the best out there... but you might want to work on those costume design muscles o' yours, or give the conceptualizing to somebody who can.

Not that I'm saying I have what's necessary to design a costume for Superman that is both different and respectable to the character. I tried though. :/ I wanted to see if I could chalk something out that's better than the high collar v-neck, armor boot concept that is personified in the New 52. Unlike Jim Lee's version, I was trying to keep in mind that he hides the freakin' costume under his civilian clothes, so as usual, I kept the cloth close-fitting and simple (no armor/padding, yo!).

At least it's a little better than Henry Cavill's costume... maybe. I dunno, maybe I like a few things on that version. I can take it in small doses. :T

I forced myself to leave the briefs off, but it was HARD, because I'm sure you all know how much I love his trunks. Dx But you know, there's a sizable crowd out there that is yearning for a more contemporary costume for the Man of Steel. I gave it a shot, trying to make it as streamline as I could and spreading the color around equally without turning it into a complete mess. Don't know if I succeeded though.

I still like the original way more. Yup. :]

Opinions? Does it look bad? Should I try again sometime? I'm not much of a designer myself. xD Tear it up if you want. I appreciate feedback.

I personally do love the original New 52 design, but I also do love your version of that as well.

No big if you enjoy New 52. We all have our different tastes in storytelling and design. It's the superhero appreciation at the heart of it all that counts. :3 Thank you for letting me know what you think of my design.

You're welcome, anytime. By the way, I heard that the creators of Batman Arkham are soon gonna develop the spinoff games for Superman. What do you think about that?

Love the attention to detail. The color blocking is so important to the costume, I love how you worked that in. The Man Of Steel suit/New 52 looks like he is wearing a blue onesie.

Thank you very much, iwonderbc! Color blocking - that's the word I've been looking for! Thanks. And totally. Color blocking might not be as relevant for other types of characters, but superheroes should look iconic and pleasing to the eye, espeeeecially Superman. He needs to set a good example. P:

Re-designing the Supes costume is always hard, because there are so many different aspects to his character. Is his costume made by Ma Kent, thereby reflecting a old-timey fantasy-scifi hero ideal, yet made out of materials from earth? Is his costume alien armor that was passed down from his real parents, being totally alien in nature and in fashion? Is his outfit his own idea? How can you represent all of these different bits of him in one outfit?

You come pretty close.

Harseik In reply to MissMcGuire [2014-06-28 14:18:26 +0000 UTC]

I'm a big biiiig fan of having his mom make it for him. Nothing is sweeter. x3 In a headcanon or two it was Bruce who made the initial prototype of his outfit because he was sick and tired of Clark helping fight crime in his gym shorts. Pfft.

MissMcGuire In reply to Harseik [2014-06-28 22:11:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm kinda wanting to combine alien fashion with Ma Kent fashion. Have it mostly be Ma Kent, but with some alien passdown stuff to explain how he can hide as Clark Kent without being noticed. Maybe the glasses are alien tech? Whoever looks at them forgets the face behind them? I don't know. But I do think that you might like these interpretions of the Supersuit!

Very well made. The only two things I would critque on if I may is that I don't think you need to bring the blue all the way to the belt. It kind of throws it off in my opinion. If fact it would look cool if you couldΒ some how merge or blend the blue from the bottom half with the top have to make it look like one suit which it probably is. The design you have makes it look like it's a two piece suit.Β Also the gold around the boots should either go around the entire top of the boot or not at all in my opinion. Aside from that I like it a lot. The color scheme looks new and sleek and not overpower or gawdy. I also like the "S" both the design and the fact that it's huge. Very nicely done overall.

This is a really good costume! If were to suggest anything how about a second version where the pants colors are switched; and the boots are more of a rugged-ized Movie/Ultimate Marvel style?

One niggle only: the chaps look with the trousers hooking into the beltline. I prefer the golden piping on your flying version of this design, although personally the belt shouls overlap the piping. But I'm just old that way.
And again, props for not hulking out Kal.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Harseik In reply to TheAtomicDog [2013-05-12 16:37:27 +0000 UTC]

I did that on my most recent drawing so the piping serves as belt loops to keep the belt for slipping around. Yeah, this particular version is flawed. I really don't like the shield either. xD Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

it's too complicated for comic book artists to draw frequently
while I think it's more awesome, the DCnU one is easier to draw
The MoS one is simpler and a costume so they only have to make it once

Harseik In reply to myway24454 [2013-04-12 05:26:03 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I dunno. Have you seen all of the random lines and seams and plates covering the New 52 suit? One of the biggest problems I have with the new look is that it's so busy (a Jim Lee habit, really), which is why I left my version very simple and, hopefully, painless to reproduce (though I'd probably make a bit of changes to this - this is considered old now, haha).

I love this, its defiantly new and not the "underwear on the outside" thing they were trying to get away from, but with the red in the groin area it still give homage to that in a stylish way. Kudos... you should send this to DC and tell them to put you on the pay roll lol.

Ghostface317 [2012-11-05 23:01:58 +0000 UTC]

By far my favourite version of the Superman costume yet! It's sleak, somehow alien, cool as hell, and yet it retains that Superman look. Would you consider doing another drawing like this at some point?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Harseik In reply to Ghostface317 [2012-11-16 18:11:22 +0000 UTC]

You've inspired me to start up another concept. C: I wasn't sure if people were sick of me drawing Supes in every other deviation or not. That sucks because I really do create concepts for him every chance I get. I don't want to get repetitive though. ><

But yes, Superman concept number 387,938,440,998, coming up. xD

Ghostface317 In reply to Harseik [2012-11-19 22:57:48 +0000 UTC]

I've imagined for a while now, a Superboy/Superman suit that keeps only the basic idea. Imagine this: keep the blue suit but lose the cape, no red booties, no belt or red underthings, and cut off most of the sleaves; just those things, so Supes in an entirely blue suit, save for the Returns style emblem, add a little red trim to the feet and voila, the perfect Superboy outfit. How's that?

Loving it. Love how the yellow breaks up the blue and red. The belt is really great. And personally I think you handled the briefs issue fantastically. I personally always felt Supes muscles should be toned right down. I'd love to see him as a perfectly normal slim/skinny Joe.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Harseik In reply to Pumpkin13 [2012-07-16 16:18:08 +0000 UTC]

Didn't mean for him to be skinny in any way. This is typically the biggest I draw my characters' muscles. Haha. xP Although I think Supes should be brawny, unnaturally so where his biceps are bigger than his own head... is a rather unusual style to me, so I differ from comics. Thanks so much for the great comment, man!
