Description I couldn't decide whether it should be a gallery or a scraps submission but I figured a huge part of why I'm submitting this one is just pure personal, so i wanted to submit it to the scraps. But at the same time I wanted people's comment on the description... please read it. So i figure i'll submit to the gallery and then move it, how about that?

Okay, so here's the story:
I'm absolutely in love with London. I visited in summer and loved it more than all the other cities I have ever visited. Even though I only spent a few days there, I was just swept off my feet with the amazing ambiance the city has. something off a page of a book for me, I can't really explain and i suppose it's purely personaly, but whatever it is, it paterialized in the picture of one of my favourite "symbols" of London - the red phone booth - seen here [link]

This week I was lucky enough to go and visit again. Unfortunately only for a few days, but I feel it's been more. I really got that feeling again and spent the days mostly walking around rather than running from one famous place to another. It's like I got to know a rock star by going backstage, you know?

They say friends are people who know everything about you but STILL love you. Well this is how I feel. I've seen London not in its best light and I still love it. I tried to express it with this photograph. Yes, still my red phone booth, but now from a different side. Filled with photographs with descriptions and phone numbers of, er, escort services, the darkness and saturation of the dirt...

Does the artists intention and interpretation of an art piece matters? I beleive it does.
Did i manage to communite?
do you think a "true' piece of art should be able to communicate without words to it?

This photo and your text reminds me of my experiences with London
I was in Lodndon for holidays this summer again and I really walked the whole time through all the streets and discovering the "other site". I still love this city

So I really love your photo, you captured it very well

Wow! Amazing photo! after reading your description, i love it even more! i loved the analogies you used to describe your love for London, like when you said that a true friend is someone who has learned everything about you yet still loves you, and about how you feel that you have been offered a pass backstage and have really gotten to know the rock star. i think that this is what this photo is all about! when i see this i think about acceptance and true love for something along with all of the flaws that make what you love human. i feel that your photo is amazing at first glance, but reading your artist comments really geared our minds in a particular way of thinking, and in doing so, makes us think about some of the things that we may love, and all of the flaws that those thing possess! which is what i feel is the ultimate goal of a good artist who is trying to send a message, they want to create something that communicates to as many people as possible on a level that everyone can understand, and connect with in a way that is similar yet unique to the individual, and i feel you have done that perfectly in this photo right here! art doesnt always have to be antiseptic and idealistic, because that is not how the whole world is, and i love that you have chosen to capture such a concept in this photo!!! (ok...now that i have blabbed on and on i must say that i am going to add this to my fav+ list! yay!!!!)

maybe it's just me because i'm crazy, but i think every photo communicates something... the trick is, will it communicate what you want it to without additional words?
I dunno if I would've automatically seen the whole seen-it-at-its-uglies-and-still-love it thing if you hadn't brought it up, but having had it brought up I can see how this show that quite well but my (at times overactive) imagination would've come up with some crazy story to go with this picture

and if i were really particularly naughty that day, that story may have involved you deciding to stay in london and becoming an escort and scoping out your prime advertising space

i enjoy the picture though..makes me think of smoky just-about-rain humid evening wondering the streets...potentially because it's insanely hot right now and it's making me crazier.. but i still enjoy it and i really like your description, it's a very nice sentiment - loving something for all it is

I totally hear you.

Having lived over 6 years in this wonderful city I feel very much about London like Carrie feels about the status of New York as her lover. The energy in this city is so amazing, and being away longer periods I start missing it greatly. I've never experienced anything like that living anywhere else.

What I love about your photograph is (possibly the unintentional) humour, as to "pull" means to score with a guy/girl in England, so the small text with the cards in the booth have a very ironic tinge for me. It's lovely how you've managed to capture another iconic London symbol in this picture to balance it out with such a fabulour depth of focus.

Lovely, lovely London photo!

The composition in this picture is great. Good use of the rule of thirds. The booth covers two thirds of the picture but one third is left for the background. The color of the red booth is very subtle, it gives a dark feeling to it which works very well because of the contents inside the booth.

I love how you caught the cars headlights in this photograph, it has a real nice balance to it. My only critique would be I would have rather had the background in focus. I think the blur seems to be a little distracting. But I understand that it was probably a little dark out and you had to select a pretty wide aperture anyway. Great shot overall.

Tee Hee! oh Andrew! mr. technical! we still have to go out and shoot together sometime! i agree with you about wanting the whole photograph to be in focus, but at the same time, i like the fact that only the phone booth is in focus because we look at the inside, and look at the photo's meaning and how the naughty images contrast so greatly with the symbols of the london many people who have never been there identify it with.

Listen to this: I live in this city and pictures like this evoke feelings like this. In theory, this image of rain and a seedy phone box should be shameful or a negative image, yet for some reason there's a quaint beauty and pride about it. You've brought that out brilliantly in this picture with two London clichΓ©s in a non-postcard and more realistic ambience (i.e. escort cards and rainy taxi) and that wonderful description of a love for the city.
Thank you.

Well this is an awesome image by itself, but you description has just made its meaning grow beyond its potential solely as a photograph. I think as artist's personal thoughts and interpretation of an image, is nearly as important as the image itself. Often a time, I have favourited an image, that is perhaps not worthy of it alone, but is easily justifiable when the artist explains their thought process.

As for the photograph, I absolutely love the stark contrast between the gorgeous red of the phone booth, and the grays of the buildings and car. This photograph is so powerful because it lends itself to many a dimension. I've placed myself there in both the street and the movie like paranoia of the car heading for the phone booth in which you're strangely trapped, and felt like a peeping tom looking into the scene. The photograph's ability to draw these emotions seems inherent and effortless. Finally the attention to detail is great, and holds the viewer in the photograph just that second longer. Just wonderful

I wonder where your signature is...

You already had my point of view on that one. The thing I wanted to add is that whatever could people think of it, it's the hearbeat at the very right moment you pushed the button on your camera that give life and sense to the picture, considering the love you feel for that city, and this wonderful mix of a sad light, a red phone booth and a cab. London at its best, for us and in your soul.

Sharing isn't a matter of understanding, it's about living the moment.

your description is awesome. i think the description fully explains your viewpoint about the image, but the image can stand on its own. the only thing is that you will have to trust people to come up with the right interpretation, or just enjoy seeing what they see in it. i guess no communication is perfect, but if you speak as clearly as you can, no matter what medium, then that's all you can do. that being said, i love the photo. it communicates the gloomy, rainy side of london that i've heard so much about.

Words are helpful when one wants to know the artist's original thoughts, but they can also limit the most viewers' imagination
I still believe if the maker wants to tell a story or something, words are necessary, and part of the piece of art.

It's funny, when I first saw your image I got so excited, another image of London! Then when I read your description I realized that I could COMPLETELY relate. I studied in London for a semester, and also completely fell in love with the city. When I was there I had 11 roommates, if you can believe it, and still I managed to find a lot of my time to walk the streets on my own and learn the city. I saw the city the way I wanted to, not always from the inside of a pub, but from walking around and experiencing the life. Going to markets, theatre, walking my favorite neighborhoods over and over, and being excited when I found new ones to explore. Sure, it's not perfect, but what town is? I had the opportunity to see the best of London, and also the worst (um life threatened on the tube!). But it is what it is, and it's a fantastic place. I have not been so lucky as to make it back, which is really sad. I would LOVE to get back there, soon. I just wanted to comment so you would know that there is someone out there who is able to relate completely.

Well, i have to admit i too loved london from the first time.
My opinion though, is that a true piece of art should be the artist's true will.
Sometimes, only the words attached can express the artist true feelings, even
though the piece was created by him.
Anyway, about your photo, congrats on the way you managed to mix both
extremes of london, the political correct and the more "alternative" one.
I like the way that the taxi and phone booth merge so softly with the escort
services' publicity, approaching what should be huge contrasts

(hope my english is good enough to make myself understood )

*joining the group of interpreters*

As I look at this piece (and the old one), I find myself thinking about some shots I took while walking around London. The time and places aren't important, and the people in the shots don't matter. The most important thing is the city; the filthy, unsafe, warm, beautiful, crowded but somehow lonely place where you can find some of the most inspirational images.

For me ... this one is a portrait of just how lonely the city can be. What better statement. Where can you find companionship in London? Whether by reaching out to touch someone with a call, or shopping for a companion to touch (or touch you), the phone booth is the place. Although you walk by countless people in the streets that you could certainly talk to (or ask out on a date), this image seems to capture the desperation of many residents 9and visitors) to the city.

Brilliant description buddy. Now I can get off my soapbox.

I\'m having trouble reading the numbers can you make the pic bigger? hehe

I\'ve read your story. I agree with you - the picture should say by itself what it means without having words attached to it. But, I think that when you yourself add your very own experience to the picture, people can relate to it more. For example, when I took the picture \"shehrezade\'s domain\", it looked beautiful for so many people because of its high contrasts and quite majestic architecture. But there was more to it. There was my personal experience as well, in there, and how much I have wanted to take that photo, and the pain to get the light correctly (I\'m not a pro). And when I took the photo of the moon. It wasn\'t a photo of a moon because I wanted it to be a photo of the moon. The only reason I bothered myself to take the picture of the moon - which is a cliche picture to most - is because the reason I got a cam IS to take a photo of the moon. Because I love it so much, since I was little.

So although I agree with some pictures being open to interpretation, I do stress the need to convery YOUR OWN input as well, in specific pictures, to tell people what that particular photo is special to you that you bothered yourself to take. Clearly, you were\'nt interested in the porn per se, but what this change has represented and formed new memories as it destroyed old ones.

The filthy streets of London! Is often how we refer to things like this.

London would not be London without these things, they all come together to make it what it is, nothing is perfect!

That\'s all I can say about your desc. really, i\'m not as good at these things as some others are, but I did my best eh.

A bit off-topic, but next time you\'re down, even if you don\'t tell me ( ), go to Victoria and get the \'Oxford tube\' to Oxford. It\'s a coach, It\'s Β£12 return and takes about 90 mins to get there. The ENTIRE town is from the age where castles were all the rage, and subsequently has some astounding architecture and gardens, it\'s so damn beautiful, it\'s like going in a time machine. I was there on Thursday but I didn\'t have time to take much shots because I was there visiting *fleet21 who is in the Ear Nose & Throat part of an Infirmary.

Anyway, I recommend you check it out.

i've always been a big fan of titles at least i think the artist can covey the heart of the shot a bit like that. but i think descriptions are all well and fair enough. a piece is gonna be interpreted a hundred diffrent ways. by different people, that's the beauty of all art. with a description you get to explain how you interpret it but you aren't forcing anybody to interpret it like that, you know?

anywhoers, you did a great job of conveying it... cheers!!!
