The joy and liveliness that had once filled Canterlot's streets was long gone, replaced with the misery and despair of it's heartbroken citizens, each one tied to the other by thick chains and heavy collars. Guards watched from every corner as they shuffled past, their presence as intimidating as the being they served. If any of them dared to look up, they'd see her, watching over her empire from the perch of large dark crystal growing from center of the Castle's garden. Very little remained of the Princess they once loved, the dark magic of King Sombra having turned Celestia from an adored ruler to a feared tyrant.

Plot bunny born from talking with and on my last journal. King Sombra was such a weak and useless villain in the actual episode. He had no character and posed little to no threat to the actual Empire. He looked like he could have been a tough baddie, but they didn't do anything with him.

So I decided to try my hand.

The actual idea Dana gave was the fact that it was quite disturbing to see Celestia using the same kind of dark magic that King Sombra used. Why would she be able to use it? So I got to thinking that maybe there was more to the fight with Sombra than Celestia let on.

I'd like to think that Sombra was the type of villain who thought he was all-powerful and could take on anything just because he took over the Crystal Empire. He underestimated the power of the Princesses when they came to overthrow him. In his last moments before being turned to shadow, he tried to curse the Princesses like he did the Empire with the intent to destroy them.

However, their magic was more powerful than his, and his curse rebounded, but he was no longer there so the dark magic latched onto the closest living thing it could find; Princess Celestia. Fearing the damage it could cause if it was let loose, Celestia sealed the magic within herself to protect her subjects.

For a thousand years, the magic has been feeding off Celestia's own magic, gathering strength and waiting for the chance to take control of it's new host. When Celestia used the magic to show Twilight the consequences of what would happen if the Empire was taken over again, the seal was broken. It began to corrupt her heart and her mind until Celestia was taken over by the dark magic, making slaves of her subjects.

This is the first time I've ever drawn a canon character, and it had to be Celestia. OMG, never again. Her wings were a pain in the ass, and her mane and tail about drove me insane. How the fuck does her hair work?!

I'm not quite content with it, but it took me forever to choose the colors, and they turned out better than I thought they would. I've seen a lot of people who've just turned Celestia's eyes green and used the purple mist, but that's it. I thought that was boring so my logic is that the dark magic altered her appearance.

This was such a pain in the ass, my hand has never hurt worse, but I'm happy with it. I'm gonna go write now.
