Just by looking at these sketches, I get a real feel for the kind of character Khenti is. I love those two sly grins you did at the top and the bottom.

Just one question: How big is this on paper?

*tap tap* Ah. 112dpi. That explains why no artefacts from being drawn in pencil are visible. I tend to scan stuff at ridiculously high resolutions, so I tend to get lots and lots of useless patterning from printing processes, artefacts of pen or pencil, and so forth. You've managed to find the exact spot where the result isn't too small, yet all the detail seems visible, and all the beauty of the art is left in, and indeed gets enhanced considerably.

Oh dear. I only just noticed that second bit. My brain registered it as a signature!
No, I am afraid not. I don't want to fly and Cali is way, way too far to drive. What is FWA?

Argh, you know what, it just blows my mind how your work can be so cartoony and yet so realistic at the same time. I mean seriously, if anyone else on DA drew a cartoony Afghan hound, it probably wouldn't look ANYTHING like the breed (it'd probably be all sparkly and pink and shiat like that). But when one looks at your art...it's like something instantly clicks, and you immediately recognize it. It's...insane. WAI. ;A;
Anywho... More love for Khenti, yay! ^^ His sly expressions are wonderful, and so typical of an Afghan! Great work with the snout and teeth. 8)

Thankyou :3 I drew a number of afghans out of pics I found on google before I drew these. I was building up my visual vocabulary so that I could accurately say 'afghan' when I started drawing my character out of my head. A lot of beginners seem to have this weird neurosis about drawing from life and consider it 'cheating' somehow, but really, it's the only way to do it right, and all the best artists out there draw most of their inspiration from life rather than just making it up.
Ha ha, sparkly pink not-afghans XD Artists for whom Disney animation crossed with Lisa Frank is the pinnacle of art-dom.

Ah yes, Google...the high god of search engines! x)
Psh, kids are crazy. You're right, it's common knowledge that in order to draw ANYTHING, you must take it from real life. I can't stand it when kids say that they want to be cartoonists and refuse to learn from life studies. The way I see it, they wouldn't get very far without it (not to mention that having a portfolio with no life studies is a huge no-no).
Oh my god, I forgot about Lisa Frank! Damn, that brings back memories of backpacks and notebooks with sparkly unicorns on them. xD Alright, I now hold her responsible for all of those ridiculously colourful, sparkly, anime-ish canines on DA. Thanks so much, Mrs. Frank. >_>

when you draw, do you give the character a thumb? i'm really curious! i've tried so many times to draw the paw/hand thingy but it never comes out right, i guess it all depends on the animal. any tips?

The ears and teeth are particularly lovely, but the little nose in the top right-hand corner is too cute for words. What a brilliant thing to have as the first page of your sketchbook.

Very nice line quality!
I was wondering, how do you get the lines to come out like that when you scan? I have one pencil drawing I scanned and it turned out *very* light.
Suggestions?

I can thank my swank scanner for that. You can try fiddling around with the scanning options.

Well thank you!
Perhaps I could even darken it in GIMP or Photoshop (any kind)

hibbary In reply to Thalo-Ryder [2007-11-29 01:32:52 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, photoshop is good for that, however, if your scanner doesn't pick up the detail in the first place, it will still look funny if you darken it. You can't darken what isn't there. If you are just scanning lineart, it should be ok. If you are scanning very precise, detailed, subtle pencil shading, darkening won't make up for a really good scan.
