Description Design concept for my final litho project (the actual image will be printed from a stone).

Based around a debate we had in a previous class critique about fan art. One of my class mates made a gorgeous print of Morpheus from the Sandman series that was the best piece made for the assignment. However, my professor and TA neglected to critique on the technical or conceptual level of the piece and simply dismissed it as not being “real art”. When pressed further, they stated fan art is not "real art" since it is of an already established character/idea. Even though the piece was entirely original in composition, atmosphere and style, it was nothing more than "a fan's drawing" since it featured a character some of the kids in class knew.

This struck a nerve with me causing me to retort “what then is any religious or classical art?”. Both are forms of art lauding a character or an idea that is shared among many. Outside of the timeless aspect of many religious/classical works, where does the boundary truly lay?

Thus was born the immaculate Saint Moon.

(Also, pre-emptive disclaimer: this is not to say that it is appropriate to only make fan art in school. School is about challenging oneself and creating works outside established comfort levels. However, my opinion is that if you have established your talents and conceptual abilities already, then you should be allowed to make original art work of familiar characters every once in a while. )

That was like my art teacher in school telling me anime is not art...What a closed minded and presumptuous statement for anyone to simply decide that they are the sole deciders of what is or is not art... (sorry my spelling is awful) Anyway I'm really impressed by the symmetrical perfection of this.

I would kill for this in a print, do you have somewhere where you can purchase some of your art?

Yes! I do have this one up on Society6 , but if you are interested in one of the original lithographs, just send me a note and we can discuss it more in detail!

Sounds like they need to be reminded that artistic innovation and a closed mind are incompatible...

Aaaah, such debates about fanart really get on my nerves too - I believe that creating your own character and back story requires more imagination and skill than using a character that already exists - but fanart is still art. You are creating a new pose, a new atmosphere, a new scene for the character/subject to be in. You are using your own imagination and skill to create your rendition. There are different levels and degrees with the subject too - some fanart is done in an utterly original style, and is only loosely based on the back story of the subject.

I really love this piece - I love the composition, the hair, the flowing lines. It's very expressionate!

Good to know all those comic book artists aren't real artists at all. Or, you know. Those Renaissance "masters." Pff. Unoriginal bastards.

I wonder what's in your professor's portfolios.

I really like the sailor mary, especially after I read the comments.

But.. if she is supposed to be the "virgin mary" does that make Chibi-usa Jesus?

You might be on to something there... Then Mamorou is Joseph and Pluto is St. John the Baptist.
