Is this inspired at all by the Angler Fish? It reminds me a little of it.

not really, I mean I (and people commenting) only realized that it bore some resemblance once I colored it in photoshop (I had uploaded 3 versions in ink showing the traditional progress)
it was initially inspired by a previous drawing I did, called "The Seer" [link] that had its eyes fixed open - it was the same idea here except that the woman keeps his eyes open and the light came afterwards as to light the way (for it to see) - or as bait for it to advance
anyway that's the story behind it
