so, since a large part of the reason i've been doing so little artwork lately is that i've been the art bitch for my brother's band, i figured i might share some of the love.

this is for djatmaterra's soon to be released ep, it's pronounced djatmaterra, for which i did all of the artwork that finally (thank god!) got sent off to the printers on monday. this is a very complex and symbol oriented mural collage thing that wraps around the outside of the booklet, so the right half will be the front cover minus the logo that gets stamped on.

this took an UNREAL amount of time and energy! i inked the entire thing digitally, a first for me, and it took bloody forever. however i figured the clean lines would make all the torture worth it. there are two seperate files for the lineart and the coloring. each psd has over twenty layers. the sheer size of the files has been proving to me how unbelievably slow and old my computer is, and i look forward to getting a new one.

the style of the coloring is done with comic books in mind, which is why there's that dot pattern in some colors. each symbol (in all 16) represents a song, a specific band member, or the band in general. this is why things like breaking the color scheme with a flash of gold in the silver eye is justified. since i know adam is very excited about ppl trying to guess what the symbols mean i won't say what they all mean. i will, however, give a sampling:

lonely man wearing a hat - this represents one of the album's songs "unfound." given the title, the guy looks lonely and is wearing a "where's waldo" hat.

insulation foam - djatmaterra practices in the bass player's (mo aka mexican fidget monster) basement, and i find it quite comical that they tape stray pieces of pink insulation foam to the wall as though that will help soundproof much.

puppy wearing a cone - brian, the drummer, has a chocolate lab puppy named brady that he is obsessed with. this was an early candidate for a band symbol, so i'm glad it was used here and wouldn't forever go undisplayed.

so, the ep is going to be freaking amazing. while my artwork certainly helps, the music is in fact badass. go check out their bitchin' myspace page! [link]
