Zutara Week 2010: FamilyWhich, this picture isn't TECHNICALLY Zutara. I'll probably do a Taang baby picture too, just for the heck of it.
But this is what i thought of for a Zutara family. Instead of Katara pregnant with a fire babeh.
And just cause i'm a Zutarian does not mean i'm anti Kataang. they're so cute when they're not totally awkward~
I STILL think Aang would be cuter with Toph though... just saying...
I'm not mad at Tenzin for being a Kataang child C:
Anyways.... back to the art...
This was REALLY fun, and a good practice for drawing MANLY MEN!!
Did you know Hakoda is super sexy? It's true! i wanted to keep him half-shirtless instead of Ozai. darn those big coats.

Oh, i have nothing against Kataang. Being Aang and Katara's child doesn't make Tenzin any less awesome, lol

I use to never had any real problem with Kataang but the more the show went on the more I started to hate it. But I don't hold it against Tenzin. Tenzin is just badass.

Well, even though this Is technically a picture for Zutara week, it doesn't really have romantic themes connected to it C:
I'm not really a fan of Maiko only because Mai was always so proud and didn't seem to really understand Zuko while they were together in Book 3...
But i HAVE seen some really adorable fanart of them too~

I'm assuming this is to my Maiko comment?
In the Ember Island, Zuko and Mai spent most of the day together, acting bored and apathetic. To me this seemed like Mai's attitude effecting Zuko (along with his own inner struggles which he is unable to vent out). Later, Zuko DOES overreact when Ruon-Jian is talking to Mai, and Mai was right to be upset with him, (although i think she overreacted as well)
Of course later they have their moment around the camp fire, and each teen in turn is able to express what struggles they have in their life that has made they act the way they do. Ty Lee joined a circus to individualize herself from her many older sisters, Azula has mother issues because her mother always favored Zuko no matter how great her own bending and talent was-- and then Mai says she is reserved because of how professional her family was to protect her father's career. Yes, this explains why Mai isn't as outgoing, or outspoken, however it doesn't make up for the fact that she is unappreciative and cruel to her friends. You can be reserved and still be a nice person.
to focus a little more on Mai before i go to Zuko, i actually love her character. Yes she's cynical and apathetic to life in general, but she pays attention. I imagine she is very much opportunistic, such as when Azula offered her to come with her, she hastily replied, "Ugh yes, anything's better than this place." (something long those lines) Maybe she was bored, but she also knew the power Azula had, and thought it wise to be on her side rather than against it.
Her relationship with Ty Lee is interesting as well. They're both childhood friends with Azula, but for some reason i don't think Mai ever had a strong connection with her. Maybe she didn't see her as an asset or a threat. And i don't imagine Mai truly thought of her as a friend. Which is why i think it's a great moment when Mai and Azula are battling on the Boiling Rock, and Ty Lee swoops in and saves Mai. Mai is so genuinely shocked to see Ty Lee fighting for her, because she knew how cruel she had been to her, she never expected Ty Lee to treat her as a friend. Now, they never said this, but i think after that moment, Ty Lee and Mai's relationship grew to new levels, and they were able to bond in prison (along with the Kyoshi warriors) and truly become friends.
Oh dear i seemed to have gotten off topic a little. i just got carried away. But i guess it's go big or go home so let's continue with Zuko.
Zuko gets the rep of being the angsty prince with daddy-issues who's obsessed with honor. seriously he has every right to be. He wasn't the prodigal son, he was burned and disowned by his own father, sent on a wild goose chase- only to become wanted enemies of the fire nation with no hope of returning to the place he's craved for several years. After all this, Azula offers him a trip home, and for everything to return to normal, at the expense of his uncle- the only member of his family who hasn't tried to kill him (-Ursa). He will spend the rest of the next season living in grief of this decision. He has no one to talk to, he has returned to his kingdom because of a false achievement, and he knows the Avatar is still out there- mocking him.
So all of this explodes on Ember Island. All his anguish, all his self loathing. After this comes out, Mai instantly forgives Zuko, and kisses him-- Which honestly i don't get? I could understand if it was a consoling kiss, or a, "Oh Zuko, i'm so sorry, we'll get through this, i'll stay with you." kind of kiss... but no, the way she kisses him made it sound like, "Oh wow you're hot when you hate yourself," ????? it wasn't so much in her words, because she said something like, "Well i know there's one thing i care about-- you" but her expression didn't seem like she took in ANY of what he has just confessed at the fire. it was just like, "Well you've suffered enough so i can forgive you now," And i don't understand it.
THEY LITERALLY BONDED OVER HOW GROSS THE SUNSET WAS AND THEN COMPLIMENTED EACH OTHER BY SAYING, "I DON'T HATE YOU"
They both are such interesting characters and have such growth and trials... but together i feel like they are just using each other as a crux to get over the conflicts they're facing. They relationship is easy, it's convenient, and maybe it's what they needed at the time. but they weren't helping each other grow. Honestly i think they both could have done better.
i hope that kind of explains my feelings towards Maiko.
