Description Another sketch, finished a few days ago but I only just got around to uploading it. This time featuring a more unusual character, my sister's giraffe-taur, Naiara.

All the little details took ages, but I am really happy with it. I do want to try a more cartoony animal body on my next centaur, as I think this one turned out a bit too realistic. I still love the result, she is an interesting and very pretty character!

Up close, she looks a lot like Zoe Saldana...

She's absolutely beautiful! I love exotic centaurs, and this picture definitely reminds me of why!

Her dark skin, white hair and piercing light blue eyes, first off, remind me of Ororo Munroe (Storm from Marvel's X-Men).

And then her facial features remind me of Zoe Saldana (like one of the commenters said below).

And to top it all off, her long neck, her ears, her height and he tattoos remind me of the Na'vi from Avatar (also like one of the commenters said below).

Overall, her jewelry, and the blue, gold and white color scheme, matched with her brown skin and strong giraffe body, make her a very lovely piece of work to look at! Very well done! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you so much for the critique! I'm very glad you like it so much. I agree that she looks like Zoe Saldana, that was a complete accident I really like the look though.

Thanks again!

This is such a beautifully rendered piece that it's hard to find anything wrong with it, unless I looked hard enough.

It was then I noticed that you did her giraffe so well that it makes her human half shy away from it.

Just the consistency of realistic anatomy was lost when you did her human counter part.

Other than that the only other thing that could have truly improved on this piece is if you did the hands better.

Lastly, the drape on her skirt doesn't hang down right. You needed to look at some drapery references to get it right.

Otherwise, this is a fantastic piece. I was really impressed otherwise on how it turned out in the end.

It's not very often you see centaurs that are other animals besides horses.
Reminds me a bit of the Na'vi, actually.

Yep, my sister has a creative mind! I love interesting centaurs
Hehe, probably because of the thin, long neck and body, big eyes, tribal inspiration... ^_^

Even though you say this is a 'children's style' she looks so graceful and beautiful. The arms and hands are so elegant. I love the details and style of the costume. Her eyes are just gorgeous. The giraffe body is well proportioned and very natural.

Hehe, thank you! Yeah, I know it is not a very conventional children's style... I'm actually drawing inspiration from the books I used to have when I was young, from old fantasy artists like Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Those styles were very elegant and pretty compared to what I have seen from most modern children's styles. I just can't draw the stick-figure-like, complete-disregard-for-anatomy people that you find in most kid books Which is the reason I'm not sure if this style will be successful among possible clients... Oh well, we'll see.

Anyway, thanks again! I'm glad you like it!

She has a beautiful design! and I like the look of her!
I'm enjoying your exploration of the style. I'm not sure how you'd further cartoonify it without loosing the sweet elegance... but well I guess that's what the exploration of this style is about.

The slender, elegant body works well for this particular character. However I think I would like to try something maybe a bit cuter and chubbier, which may appeal to children more

KuriosiT-kat In reply to Ilenora [2012-03-15 19:49:21 +0000 UTC]

you're welcome ^v^

hmm you do have a point there... it's hard to say sometimes though XP that adn it varies with age group
like how young a child are you targeting and all that.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Ilenora In reply to KuriosiT-kat [2012-03-26 03:15:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I would probably have to vary the style slightly depending upon the age group of the particular book. I might work on having a slightly chubbier and cuter style for younger kid's books and then a more elegant one for older ranges...

KuriosiT-kat In reply to Ilenora [2012-03-28 13:07:46 +0000 UTC]

She is absolutely beautiful, I love her. And i can imagine that 'taurs can be quite hard to draw, what with the joining of two disparate bodies.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Ilenora In reply to AmayaElls [2012-03-15 02:44:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!
Taurs are a bit difficult - the most important thing is to get the proportions and sizes of the two separate bodies right. Often what happens is the human body is too large for the animal portion, or the animal portion is too big for the human, making things look really odd
