Technically the mask comes from historical "Noh Masks". Mononoke merely took inspiration from these. Such masks were traditionally worn by people during the Edo Period (1603-1868). It was often used for fancy display, and identity concealment. People wore them into parties, theatres, pubs, brothels, and gambling houses. They were also occasionally worn by Shinobi (Ninja), who functioned as spies, secret police, and night patrol during the 17th Century.

Noh Masks rely on forced perspective illusions, which is why they may look kind of creepy. Tilting the mask at a certain angle makes the facial expression look different, as demonstrated here . Fancy minimalistic fiber masks, like these may have existed in historical times, but due to the tendency for organic material to decompose, no surviving examples have been found so far.

Is the mask based on one of the characters from the series Mononoke? The one who can change his mask based on his mood and carries the pipe?
Lovely patterns and coloring, BTW!
