This is an entry for "Mother's Influence" contest. I thought I'd show Jenova's influence in perhaps one of the most critical moments of FF7.

Sephiroth discovers he was the result of a human experiment, that he is a freak, a monster of Shinra's perverse designs. But in learning more of Jenova he discovers she is [believed to be] an Ancient. A race who died protecting the planet they loved, a race who had more right to the planet than humans. So Sephiroth decides to look at things in a more favorable light. He's not a freak, but the rightful heir to the planet. Oh, and humans should die...

It seems fitting that in Sephiroth's moment of weakness, Jenova whispers to him, offering the mother's comfort he never knew as a child. Perhaps she helps persuade him to embrace the illusion he is an Ancient, that he must join with his dear mother to take back the world the humans have so foolishly misused.

As for the art... I've been pondering this idea since the contest was first announced, but didn't properly sit down to draw anything until tonight. A little last minute perhaps... but I think it turned out alright. I couldn't be bothered to boot up the computer with a scanner so I took a pic with my digital camera. I'll probably scan in the sketch properly later...

The pic looked a bit grainy, but I kinda like it. It felt more like an old photo, and I tried to go with that feeling when doing the coloring... here's hoping it worked....

Drawing Jenova's freaky tentacle things was a lot of fun. I tried to keep Jenova half-goddess, half-monster. I think it mirror's Sephiroth's situation rather nicely.
