I know that spring is well underway, more than halfway to summer, but this is yet another tribute to springtime. This shot was made during a trip i made to the tulipfields in Flevoland together with ~DarthSparky a few weeks ago. I went totally snap-happy when i saw this first field, tried all sorts of angles, focal lengths, apertures. this one turned out to be my favortie of this field, since it's the only one that didn't turn out totally standard. It's so hard to make a floral shot that isn't cliche. Well, hope you enjoy.for all you botanists out there, this tulip strain was called "Willem van Oranje" named after the "father" and first King of the Netherlands.

hehe well the "technique was slightly by accident, i never realized how small my DOF was until i saw the result at home. But i was thrilled

looks like a painting, maybe the brilliant colors make me see it that way. i'm distracted by the white sky though, it's so bright my eye moves there right away. mmm yay you put up your tulip shots! yummy tulips.

well.. i've seen the real tulip like only once.. in the last floriade where maybe there was only 1 x 1 m tulip field. good enuff.. it was september so i should be thankful enough to see them. now more thankful to see them in your pics.

ohh yeah floriade, i think my mother and ex gf went to the one in Haarlemermeer in 2002 (?), is that the one you went to? it must be, since the one before that was 1992!!
1 x 1 metres of tulips?? that's awful!! i can't beleive they'd neglect our national flower like that..then again maybe the organizers figure it's too cliche

that was my first visit to holland, yeah.. i guess 2002. it's held every 10 years, correct? so it had to be in 2002. 
i don't think they neglected the tulips.. but september is certainly not the right time for them to bloom? my dutch colleague was surprised that there were actually tulips in the event..

Yeah you are right about getting a floral shot not to look cliche. Probably because because there isn't much to play around with (ie. a flower is a flower, no limbs for posing). I guess the trick is to find a different setting or situation where a flower is used. Like this. I'm not sure if i like the focal range used on this It seems to 'cut out' before reaching the end of the first flower, making it look out of focus at first glance. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Just wondering why you chose to do it that way. Im sure you chose this one for a reason though. You have brought out the colours really well and boy would i kill to visit a tulip field once in my life! So pritty.

Of the +/- 25 shots i took of this field, i had a hard time choosing my favorite one, i actually have one which is somewhat as you describe, a slightly larger DOF (@ F/3.2) leaving the first flower fully in focus. But....for some reason i still went for this one

Hehe I guess its always the photographers personal preference that wins over theoretical mumbo jumbo. I'm always gettin the wrong depth of field or aperture levels but never realise until ive taken the shot and view it full screen at home. I still end up liking them for some reason though.
Yeah definately a destination when i get the money. One of my co-workers just got back from several years developing in Amsterdam and havent heard one negative thing about it!

I remember going to Marken and Volendam in the fall when I visited Amsterdam and being so sad there were no tulips aside the windmills. They truly are a sight to behold.

ahh yeah, those are 2 of the biggest places to visit...the others are Zaanse Schans (just south of Marken) and Kinderdijk (near Rotterdam)
for tulips, the tourists all flock to Keukenhof, in Lisse...a sort of outdoor botanical garden focusing on tulips and other flowers. But admission is 25 euros (!!!) and it's no good for photography since there are 1000's of people walking in your frame!
That's why we went to Flevoland, where the tulip farmers are at.... Free admission (as long as the farmers don't chase you away), not a soul there to disrupt the shot, and you can get realllly close

Yeah the colours are awesome and so vibrant. With the tulips slightly out of focus it's as if the tulips are moving somehow.
