Description Another take on tulips. You've seen how beautiful they can be, ever seen them looking evil?
Shot on the same day as In Bloom .

Thanks to ~fuxia for the title!

Technical blabla: I seriously underexposed this shot, to turn the bright blue sky into a nighttime-looking dark blue, and employed my trusty flash, which reflected off the white tulips perfectly!

LOL tulip army xD it kind of scares me o_O which would be the first time a photo of flowers ever had that effect on me. Amazing! Reminds me of Sylvia Plath's poem titled 'Mushrooms'. (:
I don't like using flash usually but here it is WOW! makes it somewhat glaring to the eyes and thus more intimidating xD
but still they are beautiful : D

hehehe that's pretty funny It's interesting how little one uses the flash like this to get such an eerie effect.

where are the zombies?

There have only been a few rare occasions where I've put my flash to use for artistic purposes, and I gotta say you did a great job here. Maybe a little overexposed in the foreground but its not too bad, the tulip retains plenty of detail. I like the composition a lot, and the seemingly endless strech of flowers. Nice capture

haha what an evil title to begin with. title aside..
it looks like the tulips are coming alive with the coming of the sun. or like a huge cloud covering the light is parting for the tulips. did you ever see the pepsi x commercial where there was a division between light and dark? i can't help thinking of it.. i love the technique you used here mark. i want to keep looking at it from the bottom to top. it's like a little story i can loop in my head

yeah, the underexposure makes it more unique than the common tulip field's postcards (colouful tulips and blue sky). Though I still like tulips with blue background (it's more cheerful) but I can't deny that the idea of making this pic dark is cool. "different".

Wow, great use of lighting. You have managed to make an original shot out what is usually a pretty generic angle. I think there might be a bit of flat white coming through due to the flash, or maybe it needs to be toned down a bit to get more detail in a few of the floweres. But pretty awesome shot. I would never have thought about doing a flower shot this way. Did you use an inbuilt flash? If so you can try placing a bit of masking tape or aven a post it strip directly over the flash to difuse the impact of the light. You can get some awesome lighting like this. Works almost like a filter.

thanks for yet another useful and insightful comment

actually i used my SB-600 Speedlight, which has a built-in diffuser (although i don't remember if i actually used the diffuser here)
i did try to tweak levels and curves to get the most detail i could in the petals, without losing the vibrancy of the shot, and this is what i came up with
