Description The curtains billow gently inwards as the gusts of breeze outside the balcony door push and pull at them. The wispy white texture of the fabric and the way it sways in the wind makes me think of bridal veils and airy summer dresses.

I blink sleepily and watch the little sunspecs dance and flicker in the small shaft of sunlight coming in between a narrow gap in the curtains. I feel Mira yawn, her chin pressing gently into the top of my head and her chest rising with the deep gulp of air beneath my own chin. I have my head nestled in the crook of her neck just above her collarbone, and with the signal of her awakening, I nuzzle my nose and lips against her soft skin, and murmur, “good morning.”

I can hear the smile in her voice as she answers me in a voice still thick with sleep: “good morning.”

I smile too, squeezing her in a gentle hug with the arm I have slung across her stomach. “Did you sleep well?”

“Mhmm,” she hums in affirmation, and I can feel the vibrations of it, my face pressed up against her throat as it is. “You?”

“Yeah,” I say, then after a pause - “I dreamed about you.”

“Oh?” There is curiosity and amusement in equal parts coloring her tone. “What was it about?”

“Mostly last night.” I pull away just enough so that my face is next to hers on the pillow, but not so far that I have to let go of her. The light coming in through the curtains plays over her face in warm amber and copper shades, and I am struck again by the beauty of her smooth, creamy skin and coffee-coloured eyes.

She doesn’t respond to my statement - just smiles and closes the short distance between us, pressing her mouth to mine in a feather-light kiss.

As she pulls away again, I can’t help but reach up and trace the outline of her jaw, run my thumb over the curve of the smile on her lips, and then cup her chin to pull her face to mine for another kiss.

“How did this happen?” I murmur against her mouth.

“How did what happen?” she whispers back.

“How did someone so absolutely extraordinary end up with someone so inordinately ordinary?”

She presses her forehead to mine and cups my cheek, one of her legs pulling me closer until our bodies are no longer distinguishable as two separate beings.

“I didn’t just “end up” with you, Kaia,” she whispers, her voice suddenly husky with tears, “and you are anything but ordinary.”

“Love you,” I mumble, wriggling down until my face is nestled in her neck once more.

“Love you too,” I hear her murmur as she kisses my forehead. “That will never change.”

I blink hard but smile, knowing she’s right.
