I never quite understood Mario and Bowser's relationship outside of princess capturing. Maybe you get discount at the race track when you book in bulk, and Mario just has a very limited number of friends.

I always imagined it being more like Mario invites his friends, then Bowser just shows up and is all "MARIO! I WILL DEFEAT YOU!" In the more recent games, Bowser seems kinda goofy... I wouldn't put it past him.

Still, some jokes just never get old. I've seen something like this before, though with Peach asking Bowser to go Karting. Actually, Bourgyman put that reference into his awesome comic series 'The 3 Little Princesses'.
