I always thought that Gothel truly loved Rapunzel like her own daughter, but her greed and vainess got to her at the end.

Mother Gothel can really confuse you here. While you know she's obsessed with the hair, her arm is not necessarily wrapped around the hair while hugging Rapunzel. Much of it is still hanging freely from her grasp, so it almost seems as if she's genuinely hugging Rapunzel for Rapunzel.

I do have a compromise for Gothel and Rapunzel: if Rapunzel wants to leave the tower, she could do so strictly under Mother Gothels supervision...but then there wouldn't be a story to tell...and I'm being over analytical...
