Gordon was built in 1921 at Doncaster works, he was the prototype for the GNR/LNER A1s. Once all his trials were complete the GNR started construction on Great Northern and Gordon was sold to the NWR to be their new express engine and was repainted in their blue livery.
Following Thomas' reassignment to the Ffarquhar branch the big engines were left to fetch their own coaches, much to Gordon, Henry and James' indignance. Following some embarrassing incidents the three engines, lead by Gordon decided to go on strike. The fat director was not pleased and had the three shut up in the sheds. After a few weeks they were let out, and promised not to be so arrogant about shunting.
In 1939 due to trouble with his valve gear he was rebuilt into a two cylinder engine at Crewe and given an enlarged fowler tender, a design which would later be given to Henry.
Gordon continued as the NWR's main express engine until 2011 when he was retired in favour of Pip and Emma, a fate he humbly accepted. He now runs local trains between Tidmouth and Vicarstown.
