Description ~Built in 1920 by the legendary Sir Nigel Gresley at Doncaster Works, Gordon started out as an experimental prototype for the engineer's new A1 Pacific. Inevitable, many flaws plagued him when he first started out. As such, Gordon was kept "hushed up" while these flaws were being worked, only being let out on test runs. Once all the defects had been sorted, the first batch of Pacific's started to roll out, and Gordon was no longer needed. In 1923, he was sold to the North Western Railway along with a spare boiler and firebox.

He was a very pompous and arrogant engine in his youth and would often look down on the smaller engines such as Edward and Thomas, once even bringing him along with the express at high speed. However, he would often find himself needing their help on a few occasions. Earlier, he needed help from Edward to be his banker after he got stuck on a hill, and another time both Edward and Henry had to pull his express train after he broke his safety valve in front of Balahoo Tunnel. It was after these incidents, the big engine started to develop a sort of friendship between them.

After Thomas left the yard to run his branch line, the big engines found themselves having to fetch their own coaches. They didn't like that at all; Gordon, in particular, would often protest that "Tender engines don't shunt." After several embarrassing mishaps, Gordon, Henry, and James went on strike, only pulling their coaches if another tank engine fetched them. This ultimately led to Percy's arrival… as well as a few weeks being shut up in the sheds for their behavior.

1939 saw Gordon undergo a significant rebuild. By that point, his conjugated valve gear had been giving him much trouble, and to counter this, he was sent to Crewe. His valve gear was replaced by a two-cylinder chassis (designed by the Fat Controller), a smoother running plate, and a new LNER tender. In 2015, during his overhaul, he would later receive another new tender, an LNER 5,000 Gallon tender, as well as smoke deflectors, and double chimney, just like his brothers and sisters.

From then on, Gordon would later go on to become a famous engine through his adventures, sometimes through his arrogance: falling into a ditch, pulling the royal train, his travels to London, reuniting with his brother Scott (Flying Scotsman), getting view at Kellstrophe Station, taking a tumble, the list goes on. It was through these adventures and mishaps over the years that saw Gordon maturing from a pompous young engine to a more humble and honorable old engine. This was best shown when he willingly step down from express duties and allowed Pip and Emma to take his place, an act his younger self would never think of!

More to come soon down the line.
