Description My part of a trade with ~Ramesses217

He wanted to see his mersnake champion, Alexius, in my style using india ink. (original reference: [link] ). I hope I got the bits and pieces right. D: Sometimes I misread things epically.

I have never done anything so complicated or involved as this before. Maybe I made it a challenge in my own right. But it was worth it for what I learned.

This took some inordinately long period of time. *gesture at scales incoherantly* And then there's so many /shades/ of green on his reference, so I wasn't sure how to translate them all to greyscale. So I did a wash for the breastplate as the final piece of this and then stared at myself and wanted to scream because um. XD THAT is not the style I was doing everything else in, so it was a matter of going back and shading all those scales all over again. D: After I'd spent two days on the black shading alone.

As for the actual process, well... I went into this wanting to do a good job. And then I spent a few hours sketching, trying to get the lines to behave, before I had to start inking this thing before I hated it too much and had to start over. D: I hate everything I draw lately.

But the more I've worked on this over the last week, here and there, nipping a few minutes to work on it again and again and again. Really, it only took so long because of the scales. XD;;;;; Oops?

Anyway. I haven't drawn and shaded scales in a long time. And I think I did a pretty damn decent job of it. Hopefully I did a passably decent job on the rest of it, too. D:

Media: India ink, speedball red (eyes), smooth bristol, caligraphy pens, paint brushes for the wash.
Time: Uh..... LOTS of time went into this. D: Six days, via at least eight hours.

India ink is my weapon of choice.

Thanks for the comment!

Of course!
My personal weapons of choice are Micron Pens, Prismacolor Markers, or MyPaint, but I commend you for being more of an expert at the brush than I am.

Not a brush, actually. I use calligraphy pens.

DUDE, you have even more respect from me. I never know how to use those damn things.

Lol, thanks. ^^ But they're really not hard.

Put nib into handle, dip nib into ink so that hole is barely submerged. Use as pen. Repeat when ink runs out. Clean with pen cleaner, rinse with water, set to dry. There's a lot of variables with respect to pressure and angle and velocity, but pretty much you use them akin to a brush pen. More pressure/angle will result in a thicker line. Less, a much thinner line. *shrug*

I started learning to use calligraphy pens for a project I haven't even started yet (D: though I should start it soon...). Gotten much much MUCH better since I started using them, though. They're very intuitive for me, I guess. ; I'm sooo not afraid I'll break them, unlike microns. D:

Oh, you dip it deep enough to (barely) submerge the hole? No wonder I feel like my pen doesn't have enough ink.
And how are you afraid to break Microns? I don't think those things can break.
Except the brush pens. Those tips are f**kin' WEAK.

ixris In reply to KelciD [2010-07-19 04:25:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. XD;; That'd be why. It takes a lot of experimenting to get the pressure right to get the flow to behave (I've, on accident, dropped an entire reservoir of ink on a single touch to the paper before. D: Not cool.), but that's basically it. If you dip too high, you'll have problems when your ink basically seals your nib into your pen, too, so just be careful about that. ;;

I'm afraid of breaking microns because, as a small child (as small children tend to do), I did break microns. Frequently. D: Who was stupid enough in my household to leave them lying around for me, I don't know. But I have a tendency to break them. I'm getting over it, but not fast enough.

And I laughed, because I have a set with a brush tip, and that's the only one I'm actually comfortable using. XD;;; I'll be on the lookout for breakage now, though!

I think variable-thickness tips are really the thing that's necessary for me. Otherwise the shake in my hands make thin lines look ridiculously failsome. D:

With the brush tips, though, I think it depends on the brand more than much of anything else. I think I use Sakura microns, but I'd need to check.
Thanks for the pointers on inking with dip pens! I need to give them a try now.

Mm, well at least I'm aware it's potentially a hazard, anyway.

You should let me know if/when you post anything done with dip pens. I'd love to see it!

I debated coloring those eyes, but then when I went to scan, they got completely lost. D: So. Yep. Colored the eyes.

Glad to hear the scales came out well. Thanks for the comment!

I'm really glad to hear you like it. I spent three out of the five days really unhappy with it, but the more stuff that got added in, the happier I became with it. Hence the epic details. But I'm happy with it, and I'm super-glad to hear it passes muster with you.

And I so can't wait to see how your half goes.
