I hope you don't mind, but a podcast I listen to, Who Back When, is about to do a retrospective on William Hartnell. Since this is easily the best DW art in general I've seen and also features the First Doctor, I sent it to them so they can see it, too, maybe put it up on their page for the podcast.

Love his "Eh? What?" expression here.
The early seasons make alot more sense when you imagine the TARDIS basically just ignoring the Doctor's imput and going by her checklist of places to see XD

As Douglas Adams was a perfect fit for the time of the 70s and 80s when Baker was the Doctor, so is Neil Gaiman for THIS period of the Doctor - and art bridges the gap in time and space between now and the Doctor's origins to capture such a beautiful and intriguing concept. This is a wonderful interpretation of the the beginning and the present; not quite as dark as Gaiman but moving and not quite as frivolous as Adams but whimsical. And with a touch of Gaugin. Just wonderfully done! Bravo.

Oh dear... Poor Doctor number one. Lovely work, by the way. The expressions are really well done on both the Tardis/Idris and the Doctor's faces. Number one's one of my favorites of his incarnations because without him, I believe there would be no Doctor Who what so ever. (Plus, with that one story of him on Netflix, I kind of found him endearing.)

This is so perfect, I can barely put words together to express it. This is almost exactly the image I get in my head when I watch The Doctor's Wife. It is so sweet and so beautiful and so worthy of the fandom. Both the concept and the artwork. The details, the expressions, the body language, the blend into Van-Gosh-esque colours and brush strokes. Everything about this is coated in perfection!

You know, I have to admit that I only ever saw a few episodes of the season with the ninth doctor, and though I loved it is kind of hard to get a hand on them if you don't live in an english-speaking country. They recently started airing the german version of it, which does sound horrible, so I can't really watch that either. But this picture makes me really really want to go and watch it all from the very first season up till now. Which will probably even harder to arrange, but oh well.
(And I have to admit despite loving Neil Gaiman's books I didn't even know that he wrote for Doctor Who until now. Perhaps I should get into the habbit of checking out author's twitters or blogs or something like that.)
About the picture itself, I love the text on it (though I'm usually not even that much of a fan of text on picture) and I especially love the details and the shading. The pattern on the dress is lovely and would have made me mad to have to draw, and I love the fading of it into gold together with the woman's hair. I also adore the facial expressions; the awe and excitement on the woman's face and the fear and kind of worry on the man's face. (Actually, I kind of pity him in this one.) Overall, this picture really has a fairytale feeling to it.

Yep, it is perfect for this picture. Seems like it just called for it
In what season are the episodes he wrote? I really should do some catching up and get there. I fell like I'm missing out on something. A friend of mine is a die-hard Whovian (that's what it's called, right?) and he often talks about things on the show that I only get half. Recently he's been talking about the next doctor and showed me pictures, and I fell like I'd want to join the speculations on what type of doctor he will be. I personally think that just from his looks Peter Capaldi is less the youngster than the former two were (though I really love David Tennant as an actor, he did an amazing job in Hamlet!) and I'm not complaing.Though, apparently, everyone was hoping for it to be a ginger this time around. (I understand that is a running-gag.) What's your thoughts on him? Did you have any other candidates in mind?
Well, I'm used to it. It's getting better recently, but Germany usually get's translations of english versions of things, so it used to be over a year till the good things came over here. I remember that I had to wait a year to be able to read the Prisoner of Azkaban, and I got so impatient over waiting for the Goblet of Fire, that I asked one of my older cousins (who, onlike my ten-year-old-self, was fluent in english) to translate it to me. He lost interest after five chapters, though. But these days It usually takes only six to seven months till things are translated, if they're popular enough. Not that most things I like are. Good for me that I've taken to reading things and watching things in english

Neil Gaiman wrote an episode for the 6th season called "the doctor's wife" - that this is fanart for, naturally - and another episode for the 7th season called "Nightmare in Silver". There has been talk about him continuing to guest write for the show (which I am definitely in support of!). I haven't watched the christmas special yet (where we see the new Doctor for the first time) but I really like the look of Peter Capaldi, and I'm glad that they've changed it up a bit from the last two by casting someone older and less puppyish. The only actor I had thought would be fantastic in the role was Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd might be something else you don't have easy access to - even a lot of my anglophile american friends haven't heard of it - but if you have the chance to watch it it's brilliant!), but I like the direction they've taken.
It still surprises me that there is such a significant lag sometimes with translations. I can't imagine having to wait an extra year for one of the Harry Potter books, I mwent to a few of the midnight book releases and just waiting for those was painful! Last fall My friends and I watched a bootleg, fan-subtitled version of the Ruroni Kenshin movie that came out in Japan last summer, I would LOVE to be able to buy an official version, but so far no one seems to have licensed it in the US. I certainly don't envy you, aside from english I only speak a smattering of spanish, and enough of a few other languages to tell people that, sorry, I don't speak thier language. which is pretty unhelpful because you can communicate THAT with body language and gestures. If it weren't for fan translations of some comics and movies I'd be lost! Media creators need to get on the ball, with internet culture what it is, it seems like it would be better to capitalize on the excitement around a show or movie or book immediately, instead of waiting to see if it gets popular outside it's parent market.

Well, seeing how brilliant Neil Gaiman is we can only hope that they will indeed keep him to guest write, if they can't get him to write it all
Oh, I never got the chance to watch the IT Crowd because it's not much on german TVs and when it is it is on at horrible times, but I've heard of it. One of my teachers (who lived in britain for a time) was a massive fan and always tried to get us to watch it so we would understand it when she referenced the show I'll give it a look, though. Richard Ayoade looks intruiging, I'm sure he would have made an interesting doctor. Even though my knowledge of Dr.Who is very limited (still)(but I'm working on it, I'm almost through with the 9th doctor) from my knowledge of english actors I'd probably think Harry Lloyd would make an interesting character, doctor or companion. He has a great deal of charisma and I liked him in Robin Hood; but his portrayal of the mad Prince in Game of Thrones was what kind of blew my mind. Then again, I'm not sure how appreciative people would be of a 'mad' doctor
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Though when it comes to movies I am pleased to say that they're getting quicker in that. Thor 2 aired only two weeks later in germany, which is quite bearable. But with the lesser known movies and especially with books and comics it's still horrible. I fully admit that I (used to) read fantranslations of mangas because I couldn'T stand having to wait six month till they were reales in germany - if at all. The german anime/manga-community isn't big and mostly kids, so we never get the whole array of things. Especially not the more intruiging ones.
As for TV: There's some sort of project on german tv right now with a new broadcasting station that shows the shows in a subbed instead of a dubbed version, which means that there's only one month or two months of timelag between the broadcasting of the original series in America, England oder wherever and the subbed version here. Sadly the series they do are usually the brand new stuff, and they didn't bother with many british things so far. So - no doctor who for me. So in a way, my guess is that they're trying to better capitalize the young people by now, but it's still... a long way to go.

Awww... thank you for putting out the effort! People aren't always super good about sourcing the stuff they repost, unfortunately. And after Neil Gaiman reblogged this it kind of took on a life of it's own and went skipping off across the internet. You kind of have to be okay with it if you're going to post your art, but its heartening when people make an effort to track down the original. So thank you!
