Description This is a practice based on the Commando comics.
1942, possibly in one of America's most humiliating defeat, is the fall of Philippines to Imperial Japanese Army.
The Americans are shocked in the event of the Pearl Harbor and the colonies on the far east were attacked mercilessly as the Japanese dominated south. This scene shows are platoon of American soldiers trying to stage a fighting retreat as the Imperial Japanese howitzers zero in on them. The horror, anger, sorrow of those soldiers were affecting them as dreadful as the Japaneses. Needless to mention the atrocities on Bataan.

Cool that you based it on Commando comics, don't know how old you are but i guess you are pretty young (compared to me anyhoo), it's refreshing to see another style on DA instead of those crappy Japanese cartoons everyone seems obsessed with. I think without defeats like the Philippines and Singapore the allies might never have got the measure of the Japanese, once they realised what barbarians the Japanese were, they knew they might as well die fighting than get capture by a blood thirsty in human animals like the Japanese. Anyhoo nice work wish I had the patients to do something like this.

If anything most alternate history anime are insults to real history, especially those that deal with WW2.

I think they wore the British-style helmets and use Springfields.

Most astute. We also used Lewis guns and Bren carriers, the latter was meant for Hongkong till the Imperial Association Cup arrived. Though it was a humiliating defeat we upset their timetable by depriving them a springboard and logistical hub to the Dutch East Indies and were forced to bypass us. MacArthur made a good choice to take the Philippine back: it cut a vital link to Japanese garrisons throughout Southeast Asia.

I think in early 1942 the M-1917A helmet was still in use and not the M-1 Helmet you have in the drawing.

My fellow Filipinos who came before the my generations wasted the opportunity help the country prosper. We're now plagued with corruption. I'm disappointed that our country lost it's high rank as one of the most prosperous countries in the south-east area and then gained one of the lowest ranks. And only a handful of them thought of progress for the entire country. selfish beings. Sorry for the rant, The piece is great the guys who lost their lives didn't die in vain thanks to MacArthur. ^^

Very detailed The drawing captures the action

The way you handled the explosion really creates the feel The terrain and the vegetation are as woderful

I think it would be more fitting for them to have the doughboy-style WWI "Brodie" helmet though. ^^ and Springfields too~ (*the M1s are OK, they've been in use since 1936, but I don't know about USMC units though )

Thanks to their valiant stand, the Japanese conquest time line had been severely delayed.

Yeah the Garand had already been adopted but not too widely issued. The marines got them REALLY late.

jeenhoong In reply to dukeleto [2007-10-07 11:06:36 +0000 UTC]

Yea, true. What a waste. The Garand, as Patton put it, is the rifle that win the war. Well, though with the springfields, the marines really have to fight on equal terms with the Japaneses who are using the Type 100 Arisaka bolt-action.

Great job once again... only one thing, did Americans use M1 Garands at that time, I remember seeing them using some older equipment, including Brodie-helmets?

I don't really know for sure ^^" hahahah...
My best guess is em... the springfield bolt-action rifle (I draw them using the M1 coz i really don't know what those springfields look like) and about the helmet... maybe these guys are the 1st Marine Detachment, so they use the kinda camouflage helmet.

tuomaskoivurinne In reply to jeenhoong [2007-10-06 16:52:56 +0000 UTC]

That would be my guess too... and finding reference pics for M1903 Springfield is easy, just look around the internet... If I'd do some changes, I'dd simply rename this situation as "Return to Philippines"

jeenhoong In reply to tuomaskoivurinne [2007-10-06 18:14:07 +0000 UTC]

yea! Good one, return to Philippines sounds nice, since the American stab the japanese back to the north beginning in the 1945. hehehe. Or just Hell in Guadalcanal since Philippines and Guadalcanal are both tropical hellhole.
