Description NaArMaMo 2008, Day 16: Pyrovile

Doctor Who fan art featuring a recently doused Pyrovile as seen in the series 4 episode Fires of Pompeii.

This is my sixteenth piece for this year's (Inter)National Art Making Month, in which you create a new piece of art every day in August.

This was drawn on a tablet PC using a variable width brush for the lines and the airbrush tool for the colouring. Total time spent was about 4 hours, about 1.5 hours of which was the line art layer.

I was having a really bad drawing day today, I threw out my first attempt at the lines and took about an hour to make my finished lines look close to my usual standard (at least creatures made of rock are supposed to have wobbly lines!). I made several really bad mistakes like mistaking one part of the body for another in my first version of the lines (always check multiple source images!) and colouring on the line art layer (always lock layers, check layers and save your line art to a separate file after every change!).

Considering all the problems I had making this, I think it's turned out pretty well. I may later come back and recolour this to be extra flamy, but the source image comes from a point where the Pyrovile had just been soaked with water, so that's how I drew it.

The resemblance to Megatron comes from the source image, not me BTW.

Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who or the Pyroviles, this is solely fan art, I do not claim any ownership of the characters or show.

I couldn't take them seriously throughout the episode all i could think of was Megatron and various one-liners he had! XD

Good work! Rock creatures are hard to do!

Cor thanks! This was yet another one that persuaded me that even if things don't start well, or I'm having a bad day, I cam persevere and come up with something good. This NaArt challenge is really truly challenging me and making me get better.
