Description NaArMaMo 2008, Day 13: The Macra

Doctor Who fan art featuring a Macra (60ft smog-breathing crab) from the series 3 episode Gridlock.

This is my thirteenth piece for this year's (Inter)National Art Making Month, in which you create a new piece of art every day in August.

This was drawn on a tablet PC using a variable width brush for the lines and the airbrush tool for the colouring. Total time spent was about 3 hours, about 40 minutes of which was the line art layer.

I was out for 3.5 hours this evening watching a film at the cinema, so I knew today's art had to be quite a quick one. I drew the lines in my lunch break and did half the colouring before I went out.

It was actually quite difficult to find good screencaps of the Macra as they're always in group shots, badly lit and surrounded by thick smog! I also couldn't find a full body shot with extended claws so I had to combine the claws from one image with the body from another.

I think this has turned out very well given how little time I spent on it.

Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who or the Macra, this is solely fan art, I do not claim any ownership of the characters or show.

The Macra! This is a wonderful picture - I love the use of colour especially, something I've never really been able to master.

Thanks

Yes, I was always advised by others not to start with colouring but to just focus on lines and black and white shading, but it turns out that colouring comes naturally to me while getting my lines clean and in proportion took a lot more time, patience and practice...

It's actually more than 18 metres high, but it is definitely very crabby, and gassy too

Thanks!

If I hadn't gone out for a meal and a movie that evening I'd have drawn it snapping at one of the Gridlock cars as well
