This portrait was so startling for me because she so closely resembles me when I was a little girl. It was hard going to the place this realization took me, but also worthwhile. There but for the grace of God...

She looks stubborn and determined, yet still kind of withdrawn and shy. I love the way you can create her hair with chunky, inelegant brushstrokes, yet still have it looks very soft, subtle, and beautiful. Her eyes are also incredibly expressive and delicate. Her face is a treat to zoom in on and I always love seeing all the different little brushstrokes that go into a stunning picture. I really hope that nothing very unfortunate happened to her. She reminds me a lot of what I looked like when I was younger. God bless you and your work.

Beautiful portrait.
It inspires me to paint with oils more often.
Cheers mate!

She seems such a sad child, plain and overlooked all her life, and now in some dark place without her family. The power of her gaze is astonishing.

Beautifully rendered - it breaks you hear to se this and know that she is not growing up in the care of those that love her.

Yes, terrifying.
My prayers go out for her, and for all of these children, and even for us all.
But, these are paintings of hope.

I can never seem to get myself to blend brush stokes, I love them so much, like specific words in a song, not meant to be slurred...

Its a bit more than John, there is emotion in every stroke you apply, its the reason your work fascinates me.

Those peaceful colors, combined with the strength of her stare..
It's captivating. And I mean that in the sense that you are pulled into her world.

When I paint these with a brush, I end up keeping them pretty minimal...
I want to get maximum intimacy, though.

The texture on this one seems a lot smoother than previous ones...and the coloring is softer too. Plus the subject matter looks older.
What was the age?

This was done with a brush. Most of the others are layered with the use of a palette knife.
In this portrait, I blocked in the essence of the girl, and rather than "finishing it",and going further, I just left it alone.
According to the flier, in the photo she was ten.

wow. Despite the fact that the overall texture is smoother, it's still a powerful portrait. She looks older than 10..I would've assumed she was closer to 12 or 13.
