Description The Butcher from Silent Hill: Origins.
This is the cosplay I did for Otakon '08, and while thinking that most any Silent Hill monster costume would be a complicated undertaking...this was not. The trick was really the painting, and making things look like things they weren't. The giant hatchet weighs maybe 3 lbs and is made of foam core and paper. It was funny because a lot of people asked to hold it thinking it was as heavy as it looked and would end up nearly smacking themselves in the face with it since it had no weight. The helmet was made the same way.
The face makeup was a painting trick as well. It was actually just a nylon mask with sewing around the eye and mouth to stretch it is places to make it look like skin. I painted it while wearing it so that it took the right "shape".
The actual makeup was a mix of black, brown, white, and fake blood, all splattered smeared and caked on quickly and messy. The apron was painted to match the make-up i knew i'd be using.
The whole costume cost me maybe $20 to make.

Great costume! How'd you make and paint the hatchet? I can never find a realistic looking prop weapon online and would rather make my own.

the helmet was shaped out of foam core and craft foam sheets. the rest was paper mache. yep that's right it isn't heavy at all...it's all a matter of painting it to LOOK real. i based the design from several different konami silent hill sketches i found online and some "sketches" found in game of the butcher.
the hatchet was made the same way.

Your epic use of supplies for such an awesome cosplay is beyond me. Hell, it's godlike. (It's Samael! There!)
But really. Awesome.

thanks! making things look like things they really aren't is an INCREDIBLY useful skill to learn (it's also a good way to save money.) first you'll have to learn to SUMMON Samael for him to teach it to you though...

Yeah, I plan on trying a whole bunch of new techniques while I make cosplay props for my friends and I. But I think I have some blood and a Seal of Metatron around here somewhere just in case...

That's the best butcher I've ever seen, the mask over your face looks so real, I almost thought it was all makeup.

Would you mind if my boyfriend decides to follow your instructions? We love dressing up for Halloween, I was a Pyramid Head!

i wouldn't mind. if you google search or check cosplay.com you might be able to find some other pics of me to get a better look at how i did the mask and helmet.

I looked at the website, but I can't see how you got the helmet to stay on the side of your face, any suggestions?

it is held on with a nylon strap painted to match the mask (i actually painted the mask with the helmet on). if you look at some of the cosplay.com close ups you should be able to see it.
