Description Me and a friend of mine back in 1994 or 95 had an idea of what the X-Men would look like if they were in an alternate reality and evil. Can't remember how that conversation started. Anyway I actually did sketches of evil Rogue, Gambit, Jean Gray, and Cyclops, maybe Storm. But these were the only sketches I was able to find

. . . .

Yeah, the Gambit sketch. Have you noticed how in comic books at lot of artists draw male characters (especially those in tights) as "smooth as Ken Dolls?" I prided myself on not being one of those artists Anyone who even casually browes my gallery can tell that the women I draw are "obviously" women so by the same token I draw my men to be MEN.

Even back when I drew people like crap I still made sure my guys were obviously guys. So when I found this sketch a few weeks back my first thought was "where the hell are Gambit's nuts?"

Quick lesson drawing anatomy 101: never underestimate the importance of a well-drawn groin. In any illustration it is a point of attention. Everyone is going to look, whether the character drawn is male or female, whether the reader is male or female, everyone looks so you might as well make it pretty Here endeth the lesson

So yesterday I did take an eraser to Gambit's crotch (yes, that does sound dirty, but that's just the way it is) and redrew it. I'm not saying you have to go all "Boogie Nights" but damn, give the fellas something.

Is that a roll of poker chips in your pocket or are you here to play cards?

Evil Rogue looks very Imperial here. I like it!

And yes, I have noticed that they generally do that to guys. My understanding is they do it on purpose so that readers don't focus on that. Minimizing it so it's not the main point of the image.

Course they could just give them jeans or something more flowy and completely ignore that.

That's exactly what I was going for with Rogue

Considering how these same artists usually draw women, not wanting to draw attention is kind of a lame excuse Not that I would ever object to how female characters are usually drawn but the feminist in me does cry foul whenever there is a double standard.

Yea, there's a lot of that in comics. Or at least with Marvel and DC. Those silly peoples.
