This is where it all began. Night City. And much as I like Gibson's newer stuff, there's a certain charm in the text of the original, a style of description, ideas fitted together, unlike anything before or since. It's like a movie I never get tired of rewatching.
This is not how I pictured it, not with a gold sky and dark streets, but, that's what I love about books - what you saw in your head when you read it is just as valid as what I saw, and, you actually took the time to draw it. I didn't. And draw it well. Very well. The airships are a nice touch - they worked their way into the stories a lot, so, they should be there, everywhere.
...shame you never got 'round to drawing the other locales, the "scenery" was one of the things I loved the best about those books.

Dear Josh-Finney: I am currently doing doctoral research in urban studies on the representation and image of the cyberpunk city. Can you tell more broadly about your creative process? How do you work and how to re-imagine the space of the city from Gibson novel? Any data is important to me and I will give due credit. Also I would love to show your work in my research if I have your permission. Your work seems important to be researched, discussed and disseminated. Sincerely, Jorge Octavio Ocaranza

Hi I really love your artwork here. I'm curating a blog themed around cyperpunk for a postgrad project and would like to link your image to my blog. The conditions of the project are that all media must adhere to strict copyright, so I would love it if you could give me permission to use the image. I will be able to link back to your deviantart profile and will credit you as the artist. Cheers. Tim

"Night City in Neuromancer by William Gibson?"
Now I believe the Night City in Cyberpunk 2020 roleplay is a reference from Neuromancer. In fact, there was pointed to read The Neuromancer for getting the inspiration to create a scenario and getting to the "feel" of cyberpunk environment.
Awesome picture in any case!

Great piece of work this one Josh. The perspective works really , your eye is drawn to the big imposing building on the left which is well detailed without going over the top. The background details and tones you have used are very reminiscent of the cut scenes from Blade Runner which is always a winner!
I also like the 'noise' you have added to the scene, tiny grains that hint to smoke, damp conditions etc that really bring it to life. Great stuff mate.

Very cool. Is it part of a real location, or totally fabricated?

Well, I've got more cityscapes I plan to do...
Megacity One
Fritz Lang's Metropolis
New York Penitentiary
Blade Runner's "Hades" landscape
BAMA
Freeside
The Bay Bridge from Virtual Light
I'm open to more suggestions.

All these cities and spaces are really amazing, and with your brilliant talent, surely you can find inspiring "Invisible Cities" by Italo Calvino, or try something with "Le Carceri d'Invenzione" by Giovanni Battista Piranesi or "the city of the immortals" in the tale "The Immortal" by Jorge Luis Borges. Congratulations for your excellent work! Jorge Octavio Ocaranza

Maybe at some point I'll do a step-by-step tutorial on how I do these. Photo elements are used, but mostly as reference. All the buildings begin as shapes made in Illustrator, which are then painted over in Photoshop. So in short, no, not a photo manipuation.

Bahahaha...I loved that. So fucking weird. As for you question, well, Night City was part of Chiba and I'm sure they could accomidate you desire. They could do just about anything biotech related. Although, in the book I believe Mr. Sharkface had his work done in the Bama Metroplex...hmmmm...maybe I should do a rendition of that, too?

depends on how you view the future in Neuromancer and whether or not the envronmental ruin and urban growth count as a failure of mankind, etc.

Have you ever read "All tomorrow's Parties" by Gibson? I haven't yet seen anyone do a decent job of the amazing bridge/ghetto setting...
