I was thinking that this had Disney look to it, fabulous! Lucy is, pardon the pun, drop-dead gorgeous. Dracula looks very regal, as a Count should, and terrifying, as a male vampire should (yes, I'm sexist, I like my female vampires gorgeous and sexy, more as seductresses). I am curious about the first version, as I am a huge Hanna-Barbera fan.

It does have a Disney look to it.
If Disney can do Hunchback and their movies during the Disney Renaissance (starts from Little Mermaid and goes up to Tarzan), they could definitely pull this off and The Phantom of the Opera.

I agree⦠That dark Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback influence would certainly work well. And Disney's not shy of putting a little scare in.

Thanks. My hope was to make it look like an actual still from the movie. Having an animation background, I felt I could pass it off to look real. One day I might explore more and do a book of this story in this style.

Unfortunately it's not a movie, or a book. it's just me having some fun creating cel set-ups with painted backgrounds and cel painted characters. It would be great if it WAS a movie, but that might be too much of a fantasy. Maybe it could be expanded into a book one day.

Ok, this is one movie I DEFINITELY want Disney to make, if they can obtain the rights to it. If not, then they could always do the same thing "Nosferatu" did-keep the story (mostly) intact but change the character names and enough of the story to keep it from being a blatant copyright infringement (which, admitedly, the original Nosferatu didn't quite succeed at...)
I can really see a market for animating and "Disney-fying" horror literature (or just plain literature) classics. Why stop with Dracula? Disney's Frankenstein, Disney's The Island of Dr Moreau, Disney's Carmilla, Disney's The Lair of the White Worm or Jewel of the Seven Stars (both by Stoker as well, the first is in my opinion better than Dracula, while the latter is a Mummy's Curse-type novella he wrote after Dracula), etc.

I'm not sure of the copyright situation for the Dracula story, but I think it's now in the public domain. So if that's the case, certainly Disney would have the right to make their own version.
While I was an animator at Disney, they were exploring the possibility of translating the Frankenstein property concurrently at the time that Tarzan was having it's treatment done. Obviously it was decided that the Frankenstein story was considered too dark, which is a shame. I think that the public could have received a darker Disney tale. I know there was a darker version of Beautify and the Beast, but that was retooled to the classic we know now.
As to whether Disney will ever really recover from it abandonment of the 2D animated film remains to be seen (only one feature film - The Princess and the Frog, does not constitute a stable recovery). Hopefully the new leadership of John Lassiter will rebuild the 2D animated film. Hopefully it's not too late.

There are only a few backgrounds with overlay cels that I created for my own artistic amusement. This is one of them. It was not done for any film studio or for any film.... but certainly I'd like to see it turned into an animated film.
