the depth here is really amazing. I really love the color gradiation you did here, as well as how the walls have that rocky texture . I'm not nearly as good, but this really makes me want to speedpaint some more fur myself xD.

Haha, I've seen your gallery and you do pretty good work yourself. The color gradation is pretty easy to do... the rocky texture takes a bit of time, however.

Thanks so much! The more you practice, the faster it becomes.

You must have practiced a lot then
I'm still working on going faster in my art...I get too hung up in the details XD. So I find it pretty impressive you can go that fast

JRTribe In reply to AzuraeSkye [2009-09-26 04:58:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I used to get hooked up on the details a lot a few years back... You kinda have to break free of it in order to move forward. Then you can concentrate on making your forms more accurate overall.

AzuraeSkye In reply to JRTribe [2009-09-26 05:17:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's good to know. There's hope for me then!!
I'm taking an art class right now where the teacher encourages us to draw faster, so hopefully that'll help too.
How many years have you been drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JRTribe In reply to AzuraeSkye [2009-09-26 05:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I've been drawing all my life. I only got really serious about it a few years ago, though. I've always had the talent, I just probably should have drawn a lot more in High School, I think. I would be a lot better than I am now... But, eh, life ain't supposed to be easy, I guess, or else it wouldn't feel like you earned anything.

And yeah, drawing faster definitely helps you analyze your subjects more to get the basic forms down. If this is what you want to do with your life, then drawing fast is going to be important.

Oh wow, that's a long time. No wonder you're good!
I just started drawing about a year ago...I went to a fashion design college and although I didn't decide to continue in that field, I've continued with drawing.
I enjoy it, I'm not sure if I can make a career out of it, but since it's something I love, I keep working at it
And yeah, you need to work at things. I wouldn't appreciate the fact people can actually recognize what I'm drawing now if I hadn't had to try so hard (I started out with basically no natural talent >.<
Yeah, the class feels like it's helping some with that.
I should go check out some of your other pieces "runs off to look at them"

Yeah, sometimes you just need to keep doing what you love until you find what it is you're meant to do. That's really the only way to live your life, or else you're just miserable the whole time... which would suck, so don't do that. lol

Ahh yes, talent vs. skill... Ya know, I'd say talent without visionary insight can be pretty lame... I see girls on dA doing nothing but dog drawings and all this weird furry stuff, but they're amazing artists... but there's no meaning behind any of it. It's just artistic masturbation... so if you can get your skills up to par with the masters... and you have something to say... that's worth 10 adolescent prodigy artists in my book.

AzuraeSkye In reply to JRTribe [2009-09-26 06:27:04 +0000 UTC]

So true. Yeah, I was miserable doing fashion design so I quit that, hopefully I can find something that both fulfills me and allows me to make a living, XD!
Awwww...yeah, I always used to be jealous of people with natural talent, but I think that makes it harder on them in other ways, like you said, the girls that just draw cutesy furry drawings and never do anything else with it. If they had to work for it maybe they'd want to do something more meaningful with it?
That term made me laugh, artistic masturbation
Yeah...that's next on my list, trying to explore composition and what makes a good subject matter. I'm trying to learn anatomy right now and get proportions right with a life drawing class, do you have any suggestions on a good class that helps you explore composition?

JRTribe In reply to AzuraeSkye [2009-09-26 06:41:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, all the drawing classes I've taken were at my college, so unless you want to come to UCF, I don't know how helpful I can be in recommending you a composition class... Unless you just mean "types" of classes that teach you composition, in which case I still don't know, lol... Really, I learned about composition from all kinds of classes and books and tutorials and looking at other people's artwork... You kind of have to scout around for the information in order to find what you want... Never underestimate the power of good research. There are even books out there that can teach you composition, and you can keep referring back to it... because it's a book. lol

If you want my personal advice, composition is basically objects and how they relate to each other in an environment... Try to analyze your subjects in their environment and ask yourself what you feel about the composition of them. You'll find you know a lot more about this stuff than you think if you analyze more.

Lol...I just meant types of classes, but it's all good.
Thanks so much for all the advice!
I have been trying to research it on my own...but it seems like to me it's just the sort of thing you have to mess up a lot on before you finally start to get it. I'll try to find some more books and tutorials on it though.

I have to go to sleep now, but thanks again for all the advice and it was great talking to you
