Description Pastel on paper, A2
My first work of the year

It is a christmas/anniversery present for the Karen.
She likes it, so I guess what anyone else thinks is kinda beside point really.

Now that I'm actaully starting to explore pastels, I'm coming to realise what a complete pain oils really are....

Anyways enjoy

Oil pastels are evil, though you can work them a little with turpentine and linseed.

Yes it does, adding light as opposed to shade it what happens for us to see things anyway, so it makes a more pleasing picture...in my eyes anyway.

I agree there

Thanks for that. When I have tried pastels it has been with pastel pencils, simply because I like to try and get finer detail. But I am still a bit cautious with blending. I still work with hatching, even when using pastels. Old habit I guess...need to do some experimenting.

Your work is fantastic!

Jumprabbit In reply to JonReynolds [2007-01-10 09:20:33 +0000 UTC]

thanks again.

I'm coming from a totally different angle, I have no idea how to hatch at all, so its blending or nothing for me.
I work pretty fast and fairly rough for the most part, then clean everything up at the end with pastel pencils and rubbing stuff out and what not..
I'm sure I mentioned it but I'm a HUGE fan of working on dark background..makes life so much easier

if i could i would punch you for doing hair the way you do... lol. man... that is something. really great... good to see you starting off the year so well. these pastels seem to have really gotten on well with you. take good care of them.

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-01-16 09:01:13 +0000 UTC]

thanks as allways.

Hair is not really that hard, its just time comsuming and fiddly. I don't have any secret technique, just draw each hair one at a time, paying attention to light and shade..its really pretty simple if you have the patience

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-01-16 11:34:50 +0000 UTC]

oh. hehehe, simple..
kind of like the old movie were she says, "if you need me just whistle... you do know how to whistle don't you? you just put your lips together and blow."

i can't work that way... i, for the most part see hair as big blocks of value... and i build them up that way. and then go back and give it just enough texture or hairs to make it convincing... so that it doesn't look like a piece of meat or wood on top of her head.

thanks, one hair at a time... interesting.. i used to think i was pretty patient... i guess i am not.

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-01-16 15:32:58 +0000 UTC]

It actaully doesn't take quite as long as you'd think, and I also do it bit at a time when I need a break from handling the face or eyes or something like that.
But yeah my stuff is pretty time consuming, the pastels are a bit faster, maybe 20-30 hours.
Oils seriously adverage about 70 hours, but sometimes 90 or more..

Trick is not to think about finishing it, rather just focus on the current problem, and just do it for its own sake..I find if I actually think about how far to go I get very depressed

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-01-17 20:22:56 +0000 UTC]

well, i am glad you have a method... it is working for you.. it must be exciting to be able to cut the time spent in more than half...

as far as the trick of not thinking about finishing it is very true... if i worry about that i am always disappointed... lately i have been much more open about what is happening in a piece and i let it talk to me... when that happens i am very happy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-01-19 02:57:19 +0000 UTC]

I do that to an extent I guess, but I'm pretty much a control freak with my major stuff.

I just posted a journal with a bunch of my life drawings (well 4), those I totally let talk to me..I quite like working that way at times.

The down side of pastels is I can get about $500 for them, while I get around $2000 for oils..so $$ wise it doesn't work out as well..but I liek it anyways

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-01-22 02:25:21 +0000 UTC]

i dug seeing your quick work in your journal... very interesting.

well, the upside though is that you can sell them. that is very cool and i wish you all the best with that.

what bonus... to like what you do and be able to sell it.

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-01-22 05:10:52 +0000 UTC]

well yeah it doesn't just happen...chasing sales is a pain in the butt to be honest..

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-01-22 15:07:44 +0000 UTC]

i wish there was an easier way... it is way harder than the painting part of the process.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-01-23 07:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Well I tend to believe it actaully isn't, its just we have put a lot more time into the painting part.
If you study marketing the way you study art, I dare say it would not take as long to get good at it...but its so fucking boring

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-01-23 12:01:44 +0000 UTC]

oh i pretty much understand marketing... yeah i do...
i just have some other issues with selling that i find nearly impossible to get past... i would gladly pay some one to do the selling for me... for me that process is just too challenging and can i say distasteful.
it is complicated... and knowing me i know that i am probably making it much more complicated than it really is.
hopeless...

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-01-23 13:15:37 +0000 UTC]

hmmmmmmm I think nearly every artist feels the same way, allthough few would know anything about marketing.

Paying someone to sell for you is what galleries are all about if you can find a good one...

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-01-23 19:10:09 +0000 UTC]

yep finding a good one is the problem...

so i continue to muddle through...

So far so good, hadn't sold anything when I left on opneing night, but won $1000 in prizes, so I'm happy with that

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-03-16 10:34:42 +0000 UTC]

prises are good... 1) they often help to sell the painting. (everyone loves a winner) and 2) if you don't sell the painting you got some money from it and you still have the painting to sell another day.
congrats.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jumprabbit In reply to draunaturel [2007-03-16 10:40:23 +0000 UTC]

yeah the money was good (well by my standards 1K is good)

so yeah I'd actaulyl like to keep that painting actaully...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

draunaturel In reply to Jumprabbit [2007-03-16 11:06:08 +0000 UTC]

then that is a bonus then.. you get money and get to keep the painting.

and $1K is good for me too. i can always use another thousand.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jumprabbit In reply to JonReynolds [2007-01-10 08:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Well thanks
the only 2 real tricks I use are 1. Work kinda big-ish. That figure is smaller then life size but not much, so that makes the fine details less fine, and easier to handle.
The second thing that helps is a good stock of pastel pencils, for things like hair and what not.

I also blend everything within an inch of its life, so at any given point there's probably about 4 different colours on the page..

Oh and if you DO blend everything and use lots of white on top and stuff, DON'T spray it, or the darks come through and the whole thing dies...makes the finished work very fragile, so you have to put it behind glass asap.
I'm not really an expert, I just kidna use them the same way I paint and its worked ok so far
