Description dedicate to the valentines day:

おみくじ

The omikuji predicts the person's chances of his or her hopes coming true, of finding a good match, or generally matters of health, fortune, life, etc. When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree in the temple or shrine grounds. A purported reason for this custom is a pun on the word for pine tree (松 matsu) and the verb 'to wait' (待つ matsu), the idea being that the bad luck will wait by the tree rather than attach itself to the bearer. In the event of the fortune being good, the bearer should keep it.

It then lists fortunes regarding specific aspects of one's life, which may include any number of the following:

  • 願事 (negaigoto) – one’s wish or desire
  • 待人 (machibito) – a person being waited for
  • 失せ物 (usemono) – lost article(s)
  • 旅立ち (tabitachi) – travel
  • 商い (akinai) – business dealings
  • 学問 (gakumon) – studies or learning
  • 相場 (souba) – market speculation
  • 争事 (arasoigoto) – disputes
  • 恋愛 (renai) – romantic relationships
  • 転居 (tenkyo) – moving or changing residence
  • 出産 (shussan) – childbirth or pregnancy
  • 病気 (byouki) – illness
  • 縁談 (endan) – marriage proposal or engagement

When I was in Japan over Spring Break in my senior year of high school, I had the bad luck of getting, well... A bad prediction! So, I tied it to a tree.

Personally, while that is nice, I think it would have been nicer if I drew a good one, instead.

I like the paper doll in your picture!

Nice shot. Thanks for the explanation. I have seen those on my trip to Japan, but I never knew about this tradition. We have something similar in the Chinese culture. The only difference is that we write our wishes + the prediction(good/bad)on a piece of paper and tie it to something(such as tree) that is believe to have spiritual power. Oh, may I ask, does that paper doll have any meaning?

    Very nice picture!

I remember getting an Omikuji from Ikuta Shrine in Sannomiya, Kobe. I got one on it that said "Luck" (do you know anything about the varying levels of luck? Big luck, small luck, etc.?) I remember having to get it translated by my host mom!

Yeah, my teachers told me that you can have levels of luck.

Haha, when my host mom translated mine, she said that it was luck, but it advised me that I should stay away from starting any new relationships! Needless to say, it gave me a laugh.

i have something to tell about the japanese valentines:

On Valentine's Day, Japanese women give chocolate to men. Men give gifts to women on March 14th called White Day. Japanese women are encouraged to express love to men by giving chocolate and other gifts on February 14th.I have friends who actually home-made the chocolate just to bring luck

onyxkreed In reply to jyoujo [2009-02-14 07:08:56 +0000 UTC]

that is so romantic it's so common, and expected for the men to give more on Valentine's Day, so its nice to hear that in Japan the women give something so meaningful as well... i mean, to make chocolate?! thats is so amazing....when i find a guy i really like, i might try to do that ^^

its barely Valentine's Day over here, and i'm already miserable

i never give much attention to valentines, but since i got here, with my job, people trade chocolates.I receive a lot of chocolates from friends, and in the white day i have a lot to give back
who you are kiddin'?? I am sure it's by choice.I know it's hard to find someone "really" interesting, but they are out there.
    Happy Valentines J.!
