Oh yeah, and here's the finished picture: [link] (it's really old now XD, but it's the only one I took pictures of while painting ).

Picture and tutorial are ยฉ to me

You can tape watercolor to newspaper? Omg! This saves me the pain of trying to buy a painting board! Thank you!

Do you need a watercolor brush for the masking fluid? Or can it be any kind of brush? it would make sense to buy a brush just for that, no?

Love the soap tip! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who paints with controlled watercolors.

Why didn't anyone tell me about soaping my brushes before I whitecoat? So many brushes sent to the dreamlands, so many....
I'll be trying this trick out for sure.

it is very helpful indeed. Especially if you are adding wet background. I have used it for one work thought so far but I am going to use it for other works as well

did you know instead of masking fluid you can use clear candle wax too MUCH cheaper XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kalicothekat In reply to Auffallend [2011-09-30 18:32:57 +0000 UTC]

sounds cheaper...but how do you control it and make sure it doesn't damage the paper? And how do you remove it when you're done? Unless it's relatively easy, I guess I'll stick to masking fluid XD.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Auffallend In reply to kalicothekat [2011-09-30 18:50:59 +0000 UTC]

i make a pencil out of melted wax i pour into a tiny little mold i make out of tin foil XD and let it dry. then i have a little pencil i can "sharpen" and outline the things i want pending on the wax you use, you may need to go over it a few times to get a thick enough layer for it to work. oh and i use a clear or white wax.
after you melt a candle the oils dont show up as much on the paper for some reason.
after i finish painting, and before the white specs, i use a PLASTIC paint scraper and gently flake off the wax, or i use a finger nail or hair clip. have to do it gently tho otherwise you ruin the paper.

i feel that the background does not have the same impact as the animals within the foreground but still an impressive tutorial i was curious to the masking fluid that's why i read it but now i want to use watercolour again and forget digital

sorry to say this but you completly screw the amazing animal with this rubbish background

kalicothekat In reply to Sakuems [2010-11-19 01:13:25 +0000 UTC]

well, it's a 5-year-old painting so i don't care to even bother defending it, but "rubbish?" That's a bit harsh, don't you think?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sakuems In reply to kalicothekat [2010-11-26 22:25:04 +0000 UTC]

Ok .. a bit harsh maybe, but i mean, the animal is so DAMN brilliant and so well done ! it's just sad that the background you made was this simple and fastly done ...

Thank you so much, really needed this. Im just starting and this is very helpful. My colours always bleed too much, is it that i use too much water? Anyways its like they say 'Practice makes perfect!' Thanks again

too much water could cause bleeding, yeah . That's sometimes a really great effect though! But just keep practicing! I'm glad this helped you.

Hey thanks thanks thanks for this tutorial ! : D you know I watched now a lot of tutorial on youtube but also on DA but many of them they just forget that it is a DAMNED tutorial and you really need to take babysteps and explaining things ..for example I really didn't know how to use the watercolor pans like should I take color and start directly or take color and mix with water on palette but know I know how and why ^___^ and for example why people alwaysput tape around the picture. so it was really helpfull.

I still have some questions ..like how much time do you need so that the paper dries in order to add a new layer?

and I know I have to use watercolor paper but they say you need a certain weight or else the paper would be to thin and bulb.

I so love the look of this brushes and I think they also work great can you please tell me the brand or is there where I can order them online ?

thanks !

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

kalicothekat In reply to Vampiru [2009-12-20 17:16:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm so happy it helped you!!

And as for the drying time, it really depends on the effect you're going for and how much water you've used. I would have to say that experimentation is key and to not worry too much about messing it up .

And most weights are fine. Strathmore papers are all the proper weights, for example, and cold press vs. hot press just results in different textures, really.

And sadly I'm not sure where the brushes are from . They're about 6 years old (!), so I've long since lost the box for them and they have no brand label. Very sad!

I hope that helped and let me know if you have any othe questions!

sure haha I will just try experimenting and it's ok I found the brushes at an online store selling them ^^

Great tutorial indeed!

Just a question: can I put the masking fluid even on the finished and full coloured subject (so I don't risk to ruin it while painting the background)
I'm totally new to the watercolour technique so forgive me if it is a silly question ^^'

very helpful tutorial!
oh and for the masking fluid, my art teacher suggested using a white crayon for an alternative if you dont have fluid because its waxy and keeps water off.
but yeah just an alternative suggestion. awesome tutorial again!
