Description Antwerpen (Belgium), August 3rd 2015



Quite an impressive appearance with their 43 meters length (that's 141 feet for you folks still used to Imperial), the new Bombardier Flexity 2 'Albatross' Super-trams are scheduled to enter service from September onwards, at which point they will start to replace the older PCC-trams of the 1960s.

However, pending their official introduction onto the City tram network, the new 'Albatross' trams have already started appearing in the city streets, as the tram-drivers are being instructed how to use them.

And yes and no - Bombardier might be the Canadian firm, but it has its own factory over here in Belgium (the former BN/Brugeoise et Nivelles works in Bruges). Β They actually build quite a lot of railway stock, only recently they got a contract for some 234 sets of railway stock for the Belgian Railways.

Oh nice! Do you know if these will also go to on the premetro network? ( Because honestly, whose idea was it to have trams in a premetro network with no airco, so you need to have the windows always open which create a horrible loud noise?)

Apparently, the first lines on which they would be used, would be Lines 3 (Zwijndrecht - Merksem) and 15 (Linkeroever - Boechout), which are the two main lines of the Premetro network - the other Premetro lines are 2 (Merksem - Hoboken), 5 (Wijnegem - Linkeroever), 6 (Metropolis - Olympiade), 8 (P&R Wijnegem - Astrid), and 9 (Linkeroever - Eksterlaar). Β The first tranche of trams for Antwerp consists of 14 7-parter trams of 43 meters, and 10 5-parter trams of 32 meters.

Well, thanks... I only did it for a few years, but it was a fun experience truly unique... ^ ^Β  Good or bad, auto chases involving S.F. cable cars have become a Hollywood cliche. And - for understandable reasons - most don't involve the use of actual cable cars; prop model reproductions are used instead...

Well, Walt, the Antwerp tram system works with loops, unlike the Gent system which works with turning platforms on the end of the line.
