Tulrujuq and her raven companion had been traveling for days now. The more they traveled, the livelier the land got. The trees grew taller and more green, the snow melted away, the locals awoke from their slumber and sang through the canopy. Tul closed her eyes and took in her surroundings, the sound of small rodents scurrying across the ground, the flutter of the birds overhead, and a particular bird that called out to her, the raven, had returned to her. He had flown off earlier and Tul had been waiting patiently for several hours for his return.
He landed in front of her and she bowed, demonstrating her respect toward the creature. He flapped his wings with a small flutter, then hopped a few times in a specific direction before taking flight. Tul smiled, it was time to continue the journey, she raced after the raven through the forest, dodging trees left and right, bounding over fallen trees and small recesses in the ground until they came upon a quiet space.
Tulrujuq was extremely curious about the place, the trees were tall and thick, the ground covered in soft moss, a structure unlike one she had ever seen stood tall in front of her. It was made of wood and looked a lot like a doorway. It was made of wood and had had two polls framing a set of stairs and at the top a design that bridged the space between the two poles. Moss climbed up the poles and settled on top of the structure, hanging from it freely. The moss also continued to envelop the staircase as it traveled up a rather steep incline.
The raven had been on the ground standing next to Tul this whole time, she just noticed him as he ruffled his feathers restlessly before fluttering up to the top of the wooden structure. “What is this place” Tul thought to herself. The raven up on the structure, faced tul and called out to her. “It wants me to go this way?” She was unsure of this, she had never seen anything like it. She hesitated a moment and thought about turning around. Was she crazy for following this bird?
She slowly placed one foot on the first stair. She paused a moment to look up at the raven one last time before continuing up the stairs. They climbed for what seemed like miles up a steep mountain side. As she crossed under the wooden structure, the raven glided down and landed on her back. “Right” she thought to herself “I suppose i could carry you up this mountain, it's not like you have wings right? Whats even up here?” The raven settled in her long mane at the base of her neck. She continued her ascended journey for miles. Her paws were sore and her legs were weary as she finally reached the top of the mountain. It was flat and treeless and other than a few small plants, there was nothing up here. At first she was disappointed as she had expected something more or just anything at all. It wasn’t until she fully took in her surroundings that she realized why she had come.
They were almost as tall as the clouds it felt like. She could see the world from here, she looked back from where she had come and she could see the long journey she has taken, then she looked forward and took notice of how far she has yet to go. The world was beautiful from up here and she understood. This is what its like to be up so high, like the raven, and when the wind blew, she could swear she was flying.
