The winter was coming to an end yet the snow still remained as thick as ever on the ground of the White Forest. To her vast knowledge, this was what the forest always looked like and thus why it was named the white forest. It was a tough and unforgiving land but Tulrujuq’s thick long white coat helped her to easily traverse the lands. In fact, if it wasn’t for the patch of brown on her back that peeked out from underneath her piebald, she would blend in almost entirely. The trees were tall, slim, and naked of any leaves. While most of them stood tall, a few had fallen under the weight of the snow. The earth beneath her dipped and rose in small hills throughout the forest. There was the occasional river, partially frozen in some places as the racing water traveled through the land keeping it alive in its state of hibernation
The long mane was not entirely confident that this was the location she would find it, but she was sent on this journey, as all must who seek to ascend the ranks of the pack must take. She must prove herself and find her spirit animal, although she had been searching these woods for days, she had not lost hope. She knew, deep in her bones that it was here that she would find herself.
In the distance there was a lump in the ground, not like any of the other snowy lumps, this one was moving. She tucked her ears back on the side of her head and cautiously moved closer. A circle of small sticks, dead grass, and lost fur was bound in a small bowl like structure and inside sat two small little ravens wiggling close together to stay warm. Occasionally they’d poke a head up, open their mouth to the sky, and cry.
‘They must have fallen’ Tul thought to herself as she slowly approached them so as to not startle the young birds. She poked her nose into the nest and nudged the babies around, inspecting them. No injuries. She looked towards the sky to determine which tree they must have come from, and why wasn’t mommy bird around? She hasn’t eaten in days and they would make such a quick easy meal. But something inside her soothed her stomach and pushed those thoughts from her head. Instead, she curled around the nest providing an extra layer of shelter for the babies and added warmth to them
The wind picked up, howling past Tul and the babies. She instinctively curled tighter around them as her fur whipped in the air. She had been there for what felt like hours, she was beginning to think they had been abandoned until a shrill cry from a raven in the sky called out to her. She squinted as she looked up into the sky to see a rather large raven diving down toward her.
“This must be the mother” she thought at first relieved to see her, then a sort of panic set in as she realized the bird was not coming in for a landing but rather a brutal assault on her. She quickly got up and thinking swiftly on her feet she bowed her head to the approaching raven. A sign of submission and respect. The raven, to tul’s surprise, took notice of her actions and misdirected its dive at the last moment. It landed gently in front of her. She pushed the nest toward the female raven and bowed even lower before turning to depart from the nest.
The raven called out to her as she departed. She looked back to answer its call and noticed the nest was mysteriously gone. She looked around almost in a panic, was she hallucinating? Where was the nest? Mysterious things happen in these woods as they are filled with the spirits of the wild. “This raven must be a spirit, and this was a test” she realized as she turned fully around to face the bird. The bird cried out to her again and hopped closer to her. It was pleased with her actions and was offering her guidance and companionship. She nodded, accepting its assistance and the two traveled off into the wood, side by side.
