Description This is dedicated to TThealer for his help!

It is my first attempt at shooting in RAW, and while it takes a bit of tweaking - the results ARE as great as everyone keeps saying!

A beautiful stretch of the Yuba River...

I've only been up here for about nine months so I don't know lots of details like...when someone, like you, mention the SOUTH Yuba, where do they mean? My bro-in-law lives near Marysville but we've not had a lot of time to explore up there...we've been too busy a bit closer to home We haven't even made it over to Yosemite!...but gas is cheaper now

and thanks for adding me to your watch list!

I've lived here my whole life and have not been to Yosemite yet, shame on me! Looking forward to watching you and it looks like you've already found some of the beautiful areas here and will find many more.

when I'm changing from "regular" to "fine" down to (up to?) RAW, I go through TIFF - do you know the difference between TIFF and RAW?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Deliciaa In reply to kayaksailor [2008-06-05 02:53:08 +0000 UTC]

Hey Ruth.. I was told to dump the TIFF file and save the RAW.. The TIFF file is hugmongous and takes up SO much room. I really don't bother saving all of the RAW files either after i've converted them to the JPEG as i'm not really interested in becoming professional. I just save the ones I like the very best.

I don't want to confused you.. but here lately i've been able to save the RAW with the RAW extension from my camera software and then I bring it straight into CS3 and it gives me a whole bunch of other sliders and adjustments that I can use for even more tweaking. Would be nice if you could save you photo as RAW and skip the TIFF extension. That's what i'm doing now days. After i've played with all I want in CS3.. that's when I save it as a JPEG. Of course if your camera software only allows you to save in TIFF then after you have done all your ajustments.. delete the TIFF and save the RAW (if you'd like) and of course the JPEG.. Hope this helped some.

since I only have ps7 and got my Nikon camera at a yard sale (cool, huh?great [roce but no software) I had to go to TThealer (head of the everything-nikon club) to get a paint link and plug-in that lets my Olympic program read my Nikon RAW files...so some of what you're saying makes sense but not all (it may not be applicable anyway!) But I got the part about only saving those that you really like!!! I think the TIFF has anything to do with the RAW and is just an option of saving to the memory card...

I have more RAW shots in the camera but too many comments and deviations to look at to play with them yet - and I want to do a new journal! And I'm getting help with night star shots (since we now live out in the dark! ) lots of playtoys but not enough playtime!

Deliciaa In reply to kayaksailor [2008-06-05 14:56:05 +0000 UTC]

it's a shame you don't have the CS3 ..and you're right the TIFF is just another way of saving the file to the memory card... but the TIFF file is huge.. i think my last one was like 28 mgs.. so after you save it as a Jpg.. you may want to get rid of it.. and I hear you .. i have lots of playtoys here too but just not not enough time.. i'm more interested in enjoying the summer some now.. Best of luck with the star shots

People started jumping off the rocks just as we were leaving - and then gasping with the cold! Our "native" guides said they were really stupid - the first jumper didn't even check out the hole before jumping!!!

Then you'd have to stay in the shallow part like all of us - the moms with our group were very strict with their boys 'cuz even though all of them swam, the river current is really different than the ocean...

The RAW went ok, but the pics weren't anything much different than from other lake shots...so I doubt I'll put any up...but it sure does make for a more subtle touch on the clouds!

Up early sitting in my office watching the deer come and munch on the plants (and hoping for the foxes, too!) A bit too cool this am for the deck...couldn[t sleep so thought I'd do some paperwork - bleah! And check on dA - yea! (also trying to do a Nikon club contest entry on photoshop but I'm obviously missing something 'cuz I can't get it to do what I want... ! Cait says I've high talent and low skills... soooo true! maybe I can take a photoshop class soon)

How old is your Olympus download program? (The one you use to get the pics from the camera...) I'm using Olympus Master 2 and it wouldn't recognize my Nikon RAW but it has the capability of reading the Olympus RAW (if I had an Olympus that TOOK raw - my daughter's "good" digital doesn't and neither of our little underwater ones do either)but I bet you could get an upgrade to be able to do it! TThealer walked me through getting Paint and a "plug-in" that lets my computer see the RAW images...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

davincipoppalag In reply to kayaksailor [2008-06-01 20:30:00 +0000 UTC]

YEa it can read The RAW image.. but I see no way to convert the image to any other form ..but then again I'm pretty stupid about that stuff.. Also.. I'm not very likely to want to do all the messing around tweaking.. if they look good from the cam.. I might push contrast or gamma or do a little crop but thats about it.. I just dont have the time and energy for all that messin around

kayaksailor In reply to davincipoppalag [2008-06-02 04:04:42 +0000 UTC]

It seems that all I do is just save as a jPeg the same as when I've been working in photoshop...I didn't do too much on this pic - mostly it just gave me more of a delicate touch on the contrast and saturation... the biggest trouble was camera/program compatibility!

really pretty

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kayaksailor In reply to zasu [2008-06-01 05:51:57 +0000 UTC]

The shooting was no problem...just a lot longer lag time to process that I didn't realize so I missed a couple shots - the hard part for me was my download program is Olympus and my camera is Nikon...the Olympus didn't recognize the Nikon RAW images. I had to ask TThealer (head of the Nikon club) what to do. He gave me two links that I downloaded to my computer (Paintshop and a plugin...) and then it was almost like working in photoshop! I'd do it again - but not with any quick moving subjects - or at least not ones that I'll want to snap, snap, snap

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zasu In reply to kayaksailor [2008-06-02 06:11:04 +0000 UTC]

does your camera have that quick action thing... shucks, can't remember what it's called, but it'll shoot maybe 3 images in a row, THEN process them. based on when fashion or sports photogs used to shoot a bunch of photos really really quickly with a ... fast winder?... repeat winder? something like that.

i don't know if that works with RAW or not... but it might

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kayaksailor In reply to zasu [2008-06-02 06:21:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it does...and it will work like that with the RAW but it takes a couple of minutes to process afterward and I just don't know the "particulars" yet... how many, how fast to process, etc. that will just take playing time

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zasu In reply to kayaksailor [2008-06-02 06:29:58 +0000 UTC]

i know what you mean - i have so many things my camera can do (i HAVE read the manual, believeitornot), but it takes pressing and twisting so many different things on the sides, top of back, bottom of back, etc... that i can never remember how to do 90% of it

kayaksailor In reply to zasu [2008-06-02 06:43:44 +0000 UTC]
