This is one of those shots that looks fantastic when it is zoomed out. Up close, the softened focus on the figure and the background detracts from the overall feel and sense of distance here. The overall attraction of this shot is the clear contrast between the gray surroundings and the yellow boy. The drawings in the sand let the setting be dynamic without being loud and obnoxious.
Since I never got past the point-and-shoot phase of my own photography, I can't give much advice in the way of manipulating the settings on your camera or exposure times, but I will say that the softness isn't working for me. A habit I've gotten into with my digital camera is to take multiple shots of the same subject matter and then decide what I'll keep later, on the computer.
Something else to play around with could be the crop of this image. What you have now is perfectly fine, but when staring at this, I kept wondering whether it would work as a square shot, with the 150 pixels cut off from the right side. I'm also tempted to play around with borders (a black top and bottom band, a la old film), but this is one of those shots that works well without extra fluff and clothes.

Lol I used to draw my OCs on the sand, & people were "Wow" or something. Looks like he was having fun doing so :3
