It's a lds thing. There's this story in the book of mormon, kind of like a fabel, about an iron rod guiding the way along a narrow path and on one side there was darkness and on the other side a deep chasim with a fast filthy river at the bottom. At the end of the path there's a tree, called the tree of life, kind of everlasting glory/heaven type thing. And there are hundreds of people and some are making there way to the tree, "holding fast to the rod". you know, stay on the strait and narrow. the ones that stray get lost in the darkness or fall into the river. Thing is, on the other side of the river, there is a "great and spacious building" full of people partying and boozing and over all, making fun of the people holding to the rod, and many leave to join them. Comparing that to what i've seen in real life, I've noticed many people (including myself) trying to do both. The man speaking is Lehi, a prophet telling this story and the one who origionally said "hold to the rod". get it now?
