Drawn on my birthday (the 8th) as my 'birthday picture.'The thing about birthdays is to me they feel kinda like a fresh start. Your age number changes and everything just feels new and exciting, if only for one day. So for me, that feeling translates into watching the sun rise in the morning (or crest the mountains, which is very very cool). I did two versions of this idea, and this is the one that won, for now. The other involved Kobb and it's pretty likely that I'll color that one eventually.
So Dak watches the sun come up as he's wading in some kickawesome lake.

This makes me want to commit to watching the Sun rise every morning. And the water looks so tranquil and inviting.
The horizon line might be a bit too low or the mountains to the left have too much contrast as the distance seems rather close.

Great scene! It's so serene and relaxing... with all that soft colors, calm water and so on... Dak looks pretty nice, too

I think what I love about this most is that it feels like home.. an for me thats central oregon up in the cascades, and its stinkin glorious like this everyday..
and ish an ottah. That makes this drawin perfect. You should meet crash my otter, him'n Dakkan'd get along swimmingly [heheheheeh]
Artistic critique? I think you did something amazing with capturing dawn- so many can do sunsets, but your colors are pastel but intense, and you've toed a fine line very successfully to make this work. I love it. My only gripe is that a lake would be alot more black where it wasnt reflecting, especially at dawn, but for the artistic license and amazing results, I will put that critique back on teh shelf. I love this piece so much

I'm not so experienced with lakes, so that's a useful thing to hear, thanks. I already learned some things about the way colored light reflects off of water just in the making of this. Really glad you liked it, too... it's definitely a tricky thing not to make dawn look like sunset, and to know that I was even a little successful makes me happy.

I wouldn't worry about the screen name thing... after all, mine is Kobb, and I don't feel limited to just drawing the little cheetah all over the place. I have several characters inspired by different fandoms and I draw 'em when I feel like it. I do draw Kobb a lot, but rarely finished stuff... maybe it's time to give little spotty some dA love.

Great work on this Kobb. The tones are very good. Nothing unusually bright or dark. The anatomy on Dak is splendid. Something I need to work on myself. Not terribly experienced with torso muscles.
The background is just as lovely too. The foliage adds quite a bit to this. Noticeable but doesn't stick out too much.
Overall great work. Looking forward to more.

Thanks for the in-depth comment! I'm glad to hear exactly what it is that works in a picture. I think the mountains are a result of going to school in Utah... before I might have drawn vaguely triangle-shaped mountains with no trees at all. We only have tree-covered hills in the Midwest.
