Description The Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly is one of the many pretty species we have here in the UK. These are of course similar to the Large Totoiseshell, and can sometimes be hard to differenciate between the two. Females tend to lay their eggs in batches, of about 60 to 100 eggs on stinging nettles, where they are more protected from predators and the food source of the Catterpillars is of coourse the plant leaves themselves. These butterflies are usually seen here in the UK between March and October, but can be seen as early as late February.
