More progress on the wings XD The lighting in my bedroom is absolutely awful (for whatever reason, the Fire Marshal said it would be a fire hazard to have a light/fan fixture in my bedroom so the construction folks never installed one. My lamp just can't illuminate anything) but I think I got a decent shot. I'll try to find a full length mirror one day.But, for now, I got the skin on these things and it's all looking pretty good. I'll need to put the 'fingers' into them soon and pull the material properly...right now it's all just kinda dangling around.

Oh, in that case I'd just buy replicas. No reason to spend countless hours and money on something that's very likely been commercially produced. Like, there's no way I'd buy a Bleach weapon (zanpakuto or any other simple weapon) unless the replica looks really bad (like Ulquiorra's.)

Oh thank god! Now I don't feel so bad since I considered just buying pieces of the costume. I'm pretty much a beginner at the cosplay stuff, and I didn't find out until recently that they wouldn't let live steel in even if you were just going to try a contest (which totally blew my idea up in my face of using real throwing knives and swords-understandable though, wouldn't want some psycho waving around a weapon cutting heads off) You got any recommendations on a website I can order from?

About a zillion of them. Just google it. Make sure you poke around because some sites will try to sell you the exact same items for 2x the cost of other sites. There's even places that'll sell karate-style foam practice swords that contests will permit, or shortened wooden versions.

They still can move manually, but I'm really struggling to find something that can make them move on their own. My last hope turned out to be a bust so I may not get anything working before Otakon.

Yeah...I still have ONE possible option but I have to wait till next weekend to try and install it. Now that everything's basically assembled and I know how it looks while I'm wearing it, I know what I can reach and where it'd make the most sense to try and place something. I think, right under where the thumb-claw-thing is, I'll put in a small post that I just set between the fingers and prevent the whole thing from closing after they're open. Kind of like the "-" segment of the letter A.

What fabric did you use? It seems like the sheer amount of fabric would make them very heavy...

Nah. The material is just really thin glossy vynil. Each wing weighs less than a rolled up thing of trashcan liners. I went pretty far out of my way to make sure these things weren't heavy because I've had two winged costumes in the past that caused me physical pain for being too heavy. These wings don't even make me lean forward to maintain balance.

Pfft! Broadcloth!? That's sad. If I ever used broadcloth for anything other than mockups or practice, I couldn't consider myself a decent cosplayer. Broadcloth is awful.

Is it bad that immediately after looking at your wings my eyes went to the cello and all I could think was: "She has a dressform AND a cello....jealous"

If it makes you feel better, the dressform is too big and the cello isn't playable. Both are basically just taking up space and look nice, but neither serves any function.

Oh no, the cello is fully formed and accurate, it's just that the bow was messed up (and I don't know how to play a cello anyway, I bought this thing for $100 as a prop for a costume back in 05 or so.)

If you can find a bow cheap, learn it. Its super easy!

It's not finding/replacing the bow that has me hung up. It's the fact that I have to lacquer it or something. I don't know anything about that.

You have to lacquer the instrument?
My violin's lacquer is pretty chipped away and it still gets a decent sound (chips and all). But I do know the bow at the very least needs rosin so it grabs the string.

The bow I got was just bare hairs. You couldn't play anything with it. Now it's all chewed and gnawed on and frayed...would have to be replaced. But I don't know squat about playing cellos. As I said before, I bought it as a prop, not to play it.
